About What About Now?



What About Now? is a mental health charity committed to supporting individuals and families navigating life after a psychiatric hospital stay. Through powerful storytelling, awareness campaigns, and practical post-discharge support--including our helpline service--we aim to break stigma, foster hope, and ensure no one feels alone during the vulnerable transition back into the community.

We also run a blog and are launching a podcast--What About Now? - Holding on and moving forward--to share lived experiences and explore themes of healing, resilience, and advocacy.

Raise awareness of the challenges faced after psychiatric discharge Provide non-crisis emotional support through a dedicated helpline Share real stories to challenge stigma and promote understanding Offer resources for individuals, families, and professionals Influence change in post-hospital mental health care pathways

Role Summary



As a Trustee of What About Now?, you will play a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction of the charity, ensuring effective governance, and supporting our mission. Trustees bring their skills, experience, and passion to help us operate legally, ethically, and sustainably.

Key Responsibilities



Ensure the charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit Comply with the charity's governing document and relevant law (e.g. Charity Commission guidance) Act in the charity's best interests and contribute to setting its strategy and policies Monitor the financial health and ensure appropriate risk management Support and hold the operational team (staff and volunteers) to account Champion our mission, helping to increase reach and impact Attend board meetings (quarterly or as agreed), subcommittee meetings, and key events Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the charity's work

Person Specification



We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, particularly those with lived experience of mental health challenges or supporting a loved one.

Essential:



Commitment to the charity's vision and values Willingness to dedicate time and effort Good independent judgment and strategic thinking Understanding of the duties of charity trustees (training will be provided) Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with others

Desirable:



Experience in one or more of the following: Mental health or social care Lived experience of psychiatric care Fundraising or charity governance Communications, media, or podcasting Legal, financial, or HR expertise

Support and Training



All trustees will be given an induction and access to ongoing support and training. We are committed to making the trustee experience inclusive and meaningful, especially for those new to governance roles.
