Introduction
Are you passionate about helping young people grow in confidence, independence, and essential life skills? New Meaning Training (NMT) is seeking a committed and empathetic SETPD & Functional Skills Tutor to join our Bucks & Herts team, supporting learners aged 15-25 across our High Wycombe, Aylesbury, and Thomley sites. Many of our learners have Education, Health & Care Plans (EHCPs), with additional needs including autism, ADHD, anxiety, and social or emotional challenges.
This role sits within our Supported Employment, Training and Personal Development (SETPD) framework. Under this umbrella, NMT runs a range of programmes designed to help learners gain life skills, improve wellbeing, and prepare for employment or further education. Sessions focus on functional literacy and numeracy, communication, self-management, travel training, digital skills, and confidence-building activities--all designed to develop the skills our learners need to move toward independence.
As a tutor, you'll plan and deliver Functional Skills (Entry Level 1- Level 2) alongside engaging SETPD sessions. You'll work in small groups with a practical, learner-centred approach, helping young people gain qualifications and self-belief in a supportive environment. The role is centre-based across all three Bucks & Herts locations, so flexibility and travel are required (mileage reimbursed).
Key Responsibilities
Deliver Functional Skills English and Maths (Entry Level-Level 1) in a creative and supportive way
Plan and lead SETPD sessions covering topics such as emotional wellbeing, communication, independence, digital skills, budgeting, and workplace preparation
Create engaging, differentiated sessions for small groups of learners, tailoring your approach to a wide range of needs and learning styles
Work collaboratively with other tutors and support staff to design and deliver schemes of work and session plans
Build positive, trusting relationships with learners using trauma-informed and relational approaches
Track and record learner progress and engagement against EHCP and programme goals
Contribute to learner onboarding, induction, and regular reviews
Support learner progression across flexible pathways (e.g., building confidence to transition from small group settings to more structured classroom or work environments)
Travel between the High Wycombe, Aylesbury, and Thomley centres to support delivery
About Us
New Meaning Training (NMT) offers education with a difference. We are an alternative education provider dedicated to helping young people aged 15-25 discover their strengths and develop the confidence and skills to earn their own living.
For the 2025-2026 academic year, around 300 young people from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, and Berkshire will join one of our programmes. Many of these students are referred by secondary schools, pupil referral units, and Special Education Needs settings.
Our journey began in 2015 with the opening of our first centre in High Wycombe, originally known as "Toolshed." Ten years on, NMT continues to grow, with new centres opening in September 2025 in Nuneaton and Milton Keynes.
We have a range of programmes at New Meaning Training Bucks & Herts: Construction Multiskills, Motor Mechanics, Sports, Hair & Beauty, Computing, Childcare, Catering and Boost Workskills. Not all programmes are available at every location, but all incorporate functional skills qualifications in Maths and English, along with tutorials to support our well-rounded approach. We also provide a 'Transition Support' programme for young people with EHCPs who are not yet ready for a learning setting.
NMT tailors its programmes to meet the needs of its learners, considering Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We comprehensively apply the principles of a Loving Care Approach (Trauma-Informed Practice) to ensure all young people receive the support they need to thrive.
You will have:
A full UK driving licence and access to a business-insured vehicle, with the ability to travel between High Wycombe, Aylesbury, and Thomley
Experience working with young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs, ideally in education, youth work, or care
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a warm and respectful approach
The ability to plan and deliver engaging 1:1 and small group sessions around life skills, wellbeing, and learner-led goals
Experience supporting Functional Skills English and Maths learners at Entry Level to Level 1
Confidence using trauma-informed strategies to support learner behaviour and engagement
Clear, organised record-keeping skills and a good level of digital literacy (e.g., using Word, Excel, email, and learning management systems)
Confidence working as part of a collaborative team, contributing to schemes of work and programme planning
An adaptable mindset and the ability to respond supportively to learners' changing needs
A recognised teaching qualification such as Level 3 Award in Education & Training (or willingness to work towards it)
IOSH Working Safely certificate (or willingness to obtain)
A commitment to inclusive, person-centred education and the values of the Loving Care Approach
