Role Overview
Calmac Ferries Limited (CFL) is a ferries and port operations business with 1,800 staff and turnover of more than 350m. We operate 33 ferries across 31 routes and 50 ports, carrying 5 million passengers and 1 million vehicles each year.
CFL are seeking a talented and experienced UX Lead to join our IT product & services team and lead the design of intuitive, accessible, and visually engaging user experiences across our technology and digital platforms. As a design leader, you will play a key role in shaping the end-to-end user journey, from initial discovery and wireframing to final visual design and usability testing.
The UX Lead will act as a bridge between users, business stakeholders, and technical teams, ensuring that user needs, business goals, and technical constraints are effectively balanced in all product designs. This is a design and hands-on role, suited to someone who is equally comfortable running workshops as they are producing design deliverables.
The UX Lead will require to have strong experience in a highly available operational environment combined with a publicly visible brand.
Principal Accountabilities
UX Leadership & Collaboration:
Act as the UX design authority across multiple IT product workstreams.
Facilitate workshops, design critiques, and stakeholder reviews.
Manage third party delivery by technology partners/providers
Collaborate closely with product owners, business analysts, developers, and testers throughout the agile lifecycle.
Advocate for a user-centred design culture across the organisation.
UX Design:
Lead the discovery and definition of user needs through research, personas, and journey mapping.
Plan and conduct user interviews, usability testing, and feedback sessions to inform and validate design decisions.
Design intuitive user journeys, task flows, and interaction patterns that align with business and user objectives.
Champion accessibility and inclusivity in all experience design work (e.g., WCAG standards).
Qualifications, skills and experience
5+ years of experience in a UX role.
Degree or formal training in UX Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Digital Media, or related discipline.
Additional certifications in UX or usability (e.g., Nielsen Norman, HFI) are beneficial.
Understanding of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) to collaborate effectively with developers.
Experience designing for accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.1).
Knowledge of service design practices, including end-to-end service mapping.
Experience working in regulated environments (e.g., transport, government, healthcare, finance).
Familiarity with analytics and behavioural data to inform iterative improvements
Strong portfolio demonstrating successful delivery of user-centred designs across applications.
Experience with design tools such as Figma, InVision, Adobe XD, or similar.
Strong understanding of interaction design, visual hierarchy, typography, colour theory, and responsive layout.
Experience running user research and usability testing activities.
Ability to translate complex workflows or technical processes into simple, elegant user experiences.
Familiarity with Agile and product development processes.
Excellent communication and facilitation skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Pragmatic and delivery-focused, able to balance vision with constraints.
