Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons is seeking to appoint a Veterinary Technician to assist one of our stud farm Clinical Directors, Oliver Pynn, based in Newmarket. This position is a 5-month fixed term contract to cover the 2026 foal season, from end of January 2026 to end of June 2026.
The role will require a reliable, hard-working and motivated individual with outstanding attention to detail, who is looking for a rewarding and challenging position within the equine veterinary industry. Please note, this is a physically demanding role that will require work outside in varied weather conditions.
You must be a competent horse handler, capable of providing veterinary technical assistance and support where required. Experience of the equine industry is essential; however, full training will be provided to further expand your skills where necessary.
This is a full-time position, working 45 hours per week, 7.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Other hours may be required in accordance with business needs and generally will be recompensed as paid overtime.
The main aspects of this role include (but are not limited to):
Introducing yourself to owners/clients, when appropriate, and always providing a professional service when on client premises or at Rossdales sites.
Presenting a tidy and professional appearance at all times, including wearing practice uniform and appropriate footwear for working with horses.
Assisting with stud duties, stocking the vet's car, preparing medications and helping with other veterinary treatments and proceedures as required. This may include helping with x-rays.
All aspects of horse holding, for example;
Scans
Bloods
Castrations
Bandage change
Abscesses and sarcoid treatment
Dentals
Scopes
Health certificates
Scrubbing horse areas and joints where necessary in preparation for injections.
Preparing horse/equipment for veterinary inspection/veterinary procedures.
Assisting vets in other procedures, which may include clipping and prepping.
Liaising with the vet in charge of the case at any time regarding any concerns you may have to the needs/welfare/safety of that horse.
Driving, loading and unloading equipment.
Occasionally travelling for vettings, sales, pre-sales, X-rays and scopes etc.
All tasks must be undertaken with awareness of and care for the safety of all personnel at all times.
Internal duties may include:
Care of medical equipment include setting up, shutting down, handling of equipment
e.g. scopes and X-ray machines.
Cleaning and, where indicated, sterilising equipment, including:
Scopes
Vet stitch kits
Castration kits
Tubes/catheters etc
Dentistry equipment
Quality checking equipment and running test cycles.
Reporting damage or malfunction of equipment and taking out of use until repaired.
Maintaining endoscope fleet and sending off for repair when broken.
Ordering equipment, where necessary, and recording as appropriate.
Record keeping, including autoclave and other equipment maintenance, purchasing and disposal.
Ensuring your work area is clean and cupboards are well stocked by checking regularly throughout the day.
Maintaining car and van fleet, cleaning vehicles inside and out and assisting with stocking cars and vans when requested.
Drawing up medicines and preparing kits etc when required.
General maintenance
Cleaning brass
Yard area - e.g. sweeping, cutting grass, weed killing, keeping clean and tidy
Washing - e.g. towels, lab coats, overalls
Uploading images to Eclipse.
Working in conjunction with other members of the Rossdales team.
All Rossdales support staff are required to have a flexible approach to their duties and may, at any time, be required to cover absence and illness in closely associated departments across the site, sometimes at short notice including general horse care (mucking out, feeding etc).
Any other duties reasonably requested by the Practice.
