Do you want to give something back to your local community? Could you help improve the life of a lonely older person. Volunteers are urgently need to help and support isolated older people in Blaenau Gwent.
Volunteering Matters are urgently looking for Volunteer Community Buddy's, to help isolated older people get out to local groups and activities.
Life can be difficult for some older people. Some people struggle to go out due to lack of confidence or mobility issues. They can find it hard to get out and meet people. and this has only got worse since the Covid-19 pandemic. You could have a positive impact on their lives and their mental health.
By supporting someone to engage with a group or activity, you would be having a positive impact on their mental health and general happiness.
By volunteering as a Buddy you will be helping others while getting enjoyment out of it yourself. Your volunteering can fit around your other commitments and you only need to be able to give 1-2 hours a week.
All volunteers will have to undergo a DBS check and supply 2 character references.
Please note this is an unpaid volunteer role.
Summary
As an Older Person's Buddying Volunteer, you will provide essential support to older adults, boosting their confidence and enhancing their quality of life. This role requires strong communication skills to foster meaningful connections and a compassionate approach, including possibly for some experiencing some dementia. You will report to the Volunteer Coordinator and collaborate with other volunteers to ensure a positive experience for the individuals you assist.
Responsibilities
Engage in regular activities with older individuals, boosting confidence and providing emotional support. Assist in planning and participating in activities that promote social interaction and mental stimulation. Demonstrate effective communication skills to understand and respond to the needs of those with dementia. Maintain records of interactions and report any concerns to the coordinating team. Foster a positive and supportive environment to enhance the well-being of older persons.
