About Us

Afghan Association Paiwand is a registered charity and limited company established in 2002. Our mission is to empower Afghan, refugee, and wider migrant communities across the UK through services that reduce poverty, advance education, and promote mental, social, and emotional wellbeing. We provide a wide range of support, from housing and advocacy to youth services, mental health counselling, and community education.

We currently support over 1,800 individuals annually across Northwest London and beyond.

The Role

We are seeking a creative and dedicated individual to join our Board of Trustees as the Campaigning and Public Relations (PR) Lead. This role is ideal for someone with experience in public communications, media, digital campaigning, or brand visibility who wants to play a leading role in increasing Paiwand's reach and impact.

As a Trustee, you will support Paiwand's mission and ensure our voice and message are clearly heard across the community, stakeholder networks, and media platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and oversee Paiwand's external communications, public image, and digital presence. Lead awareness-raising campaigns on issues affecting refugee and migrant communities. Build and maintain relationships with local and national media outlets. Advise on crisis communication, press statements, and reputation management. Strengthen Paiwand's social media and website strategy to amplify service delivery and fundraising. Collaborate with the board and staff to align campaigns with organisational goals and advocacy priorities. Contribute to promotional materials, newsletters, and storytelling efforts. Attend quarterly board meetings and contribute to governance decisions. Participate in annual strategy days and charity events.
Who We're Looking For

Essential:

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling messages for public, community, and media audiences. A genuine passion for community development, social justice, and the rights and wellbeing of refugee and migrant communities. Strategic thinking and confidence in shaping and advising on communication plans, media messaging, and public engagement. Commitment to playing an active role in charity governance, with a collaborative and solutions-focused approach to external relations.
Desirable:

Demonstrable experience in public relations, journalism, campaigning, media production, or digital communications. Strong awareness of the social, cultural, and systemic challenges faced by displaced or marginalised populations. Proficiency in using digital platforms (e.g. social media, websites, newsletters) to drive engagement, build brand presence, and connect with diverse audiences. A background in planning or delivering impactful charity campaigns, awareness-raising projects, or advocacy initiatives.
Time Commitment

Quarterly board meetings (virtual or in-person). A few flexible hours each quarter, depending on organisational needs. (especially around campaigns, PR reviews, or urgent statements). Participation in annual away days and special events such as community campaigns or media visits.
