About the role
We are seeking an experienced Will Writer to work in-house as part of our business that also works closely with our financial services team. The role involves collaborating with financial advisers and client relationship managers to provide legally compliant estate planning services, including drafting wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). You will ensure that clients' wishes are clearly documented while considering inheritance tax implications, trusts, and overall financial planning strategies. This position requires strong technical legal knowledge, commercial awareness, and exceptional client communication skills.
Key responsibilities and duties
- Work closely with financial advisers to assess clients' estate planning needs.
- Draft wills, codicils, and testamentary documents in compliance with UK law.
- Advise and prepare Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) for health & welfare and property & financial affairs.
- Identify opportunities for Inheritance Tax (IHT) planning, trusts, and estate protection strategies.
- Conduct client meetings (face-to-face or remote) to gather instructions and explain legal options.
- Maintain high-quality client records and use internal case management tools.
- Work with compliance teams to ensure legal, FCA, and regulatory standards are met.
- Keep up to date with changes in probate, tax, and estate planning law.
- Identify opportunities to improve estate planning processes within the firm.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years' experience drafting wills and LPAs.
- Experience of UK estate planning and probate procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to explain legal concepts clearly.
- Ability to work with financial advisers to align wills with wider financial goals and investment strategies.
- High attention to detail and document accuracy.
- Strong client care and confidentiality standards.
Desirable Experience
- Background in Will writing, financial services or regulated environments.
- Membership of Society of Will Writers (SWW), Institute of Professional Will writers (IPW), STEP qualification or similar
- Legal qualifications (e.g., CILEx, law degree, paralegal experience).
- Experience with trusts, inheritance tax planning, or later-life planning.
- Knowledge of FCA regulations relating to financial advice and client data.
