Wood Machinist/joiner

Sheffield, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Job title:

Wood Machinist

Reporting line:

Operations Manager

Role:

This interesting and challenging role will be suitable for an intelligent individual with excellent communication skills and a conscientious work ethic. You be a key member of a small team within a growing firm, at an exciting point in its development. We are looking for long term employees who want to contribute and be a part of the firm's success.

You will be machining batch production runs of joinery components and finished work surfaces, all from high quality hardwoods. We machine a lot of English and European Oak for joinery work and furniture production. We also work directly for the end user, making one-off kitchen work surfaces, window boards, bar and table tops in a variety of species, usually leaving the workshop sanded and oiled. These pieces usually allow for creativity by utilising the waney edge and incorporating large knots and other features that would be deemed defects in standard joinery components.

Our ideal candidate is someone who will appreciate the variety of work we undertake, understands the varied nature of the material used, and is keen to broaden the scope of work we can offer, through their experience in other aspects of joinery work and furniture production.

Liaising with the operations manager, you will be responsible for the day to day running of the machine shop and the delegation of tasks to the machining assistant.

Responsibilities:

Whilst the general machining schedule is co-ordinated by the operations manager, you will be responsible for the delegation of individual tasks to the machining assistant, where appropriate.

Good communication with the operations manager, keeping them up to date with progress.

Working from job sheets, picking timber for orders and judging whether the timber chosen is most suitable for the job in hand.

Most importantly you will be responsible for yourself. You must be able to work by yourself with pace and momentum, taking full responsibility for your work and the jobs being machined. Once established with the company after the initial training period, you will be expected to perform your duties with minimal instruction and be able to make best use of your time.

Maintaining safety and good working conditions within the workspace.

Ideal requirements:

A working knowledge of commercial timber species, grain pattern and orientation, and the different timber grades is essential.

Experience on traditional woodworking machines is essential, including planer thicknesser, straight line edger, 4 sided planer, wide belt sander and spindle moulder.

Experience on forklifts ideal but not essential. Training can be provided if necessary, but a willingness to undertake such training is essential.

Previous experience in a machine shop or joinery workshop essential.

Ability to take responsibility, especially in high pressure and difficult situations, whilst maintaining a positive attitude.

Excellent memory and ability to learn key product knowledge.

A keen interest in timber and wooden products and a desire to promote quality British made products.

A willingness to work overtime if required and perform tasks outside the normal scope of your role.

Hours:

Full time, Monday to Friday 8am-5pm, with a 30 minute dinner break.

Qualifications:

Time served machining, joinery or cabinetry qualifications preferred.

Salary:

Negotiable based on ability and experience.
