About the role
We're looking for a proactive, hands-on Workshop Manager to support and deputise for the Engineering Manager in leading depot performance. You'll be at the heart of everything - from managing fleet and environmental standards to ensuring an outstanding customer experience, all while keeping us on track with legislative and policy compliance. Your role is all about clear planning, smart thinking, and strong leadership. You'll prepare detailed job plans, estimate timings, balance workloads, and guide your team using established technical standards. Your experience will help drive consistency, efficiency, and safety across the board. Most importantly, you'll connect with the front-line - communicating openly, listening actively, and recognising great work to build a motivated, high-performing team.
Role responsibilities include:
Lead and manage the depot engineering team in line with company policies and legislation
Ensure the team is trained, resourced, and high-performing
Drive a culture of continuous improvement and innovation
Oversee fleet maintenance and compliance with statutory regulations
Manage stock control and warranty processes with the Stores Manager
Maintain depot equipment and ensure contract servicing is delivered
Keep accurate records of fleet, engineering, and environmental performance
Conduct audits and ensure compliance with all standards
Reduce lost mileage and breakdowns to meet performance targets
Deliver improvement plans and control engineering costs within budget
About you
Are you a UK resident and can provide proof of right to work?
Do you possess at minimum, an NVQ Level 3 standard or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering (i.e., City & Guilds Level 1 & 2)?
Do you currently hold, or are you able to obtain, a full PCV licence and a forklift truck licence if required?
Are you fully conversant with the safe operation of a range of workshop equipment, including hydraulic lifts, oil systems, battery tools, jacks, scaffolding, pressure washers, headlamp testers, and power tools?
