Role Summary:
Workshop Manager / Controller - Job Overview
We are looking for a highly organised and hands-on Workshop Manager to oversee daily workshop operations, ensuring the smooth and efficient flow of high-quality vehicle builds and restorations. This is a key leadership role responsible for planning, scheduling, and coordinating all workshop activities, managing technicians, and maintaining the highest standards of quality and productivity.
You'll work closely with the operations team and directly with the business owner to deliver world-class craftsmanship on time and on budget. A deep understanding of vehicle workshops and production management, strong communication skills, and the ability to lead and motivate a team are essential.
Key Responsibilities
1. Workshop Operations & Scheduling
Plan, allocate, and prioritise workshop jobs to maximise output and meet deadlines
Create and manage weekly schedules for each technician
Monitor job progress and adjust workloads to avoid bottlenecks or delays
2. Quality Control & Standards
Ensure all work meets the highest quality standards in craftsmanship and safety
Conduct inspections at key stages of each build/restoration
Sign off completed work and ensure client-ready presentation
3. Team Management & Leadership
Lead, motivate, and support a small team of skilled mechanics and fabricators
Provide daily oversight, guidance, and hands-on support where needed
Monitor timekeeping, performance, and training needs
4. Workflow & Documentation
Maintain accurate job tracking, time sheets, and progress reports
Ensure build sheets and parts lists are followed correctly
Liaise with the parts department to avoid delays due to stock issues
5. Communication & Reporting
Act as the link between workshop staff and owner
Attend daily/weekly check-ins with the owner to report on status, issues, and improvements
Support after sales and rework requests as needed
Required Skills & Experience
Essential:
Proven experience managing a workshop or leading a vehicle restoration team
Ability to prioritise and organise multiple jobs in a fast-paced environment
Keen time management and control
Focus on the operational detail to evoide mission creep
Production management
Confident communicator and natural team leader
Preferred:
Experience in working in production management emviorment
Previous experience in classic vehicle restoration or custom automotive builds
Working knowledge of stock control or parts ordering processes
Flexible, calm under pressure, and adaptable to changing priorities
