Flamingo Land is seeking a qualified veterinary surgeon to join the veterinary department. This is a fantastic opportunity to work as part of a growing veterinary and animal care team committed to providing exceptional standards of animal health and welfare.
Flamingo Land is home to around 130 species, nearly 2000 animals. We are members of BIAZA, EAZA and WAZA.
We currently have an established full-time on-site vet and are now expanding our team with the addition of a second veterinary surgeon. This position will suit a person who is able to work collaboratively with both the animal care team, the existing veterinary team and the senior management team on the continued development of our in-house veterinary facilities, preventative health programmes, and case management.
Key responsibilities
? Responsibility for the delivery of preventative and curative veterinary care, including diagnostics and treatment, across a wide range of species
? Manage the relevant regulatory obligations associated with the role and meet the ethical responsibilities as set out in the RCVS code of professional conduct
? Ensure compliance with current veterinary medicine regulations regarding the use and storage of drugs, vaccines and other veterinary products
? Contribute to continually improving standards of animal welfare and management, including exhibit design, import and export of animals, quarantine, husbandry training, nutrition and enrichment programmes
? Ensuring detailed clinical and pathological records are maintained
? Support and contribute to the continued development of the zoo hospital and veterinary facilities
? Perform in-house post-mortem examinations and laboratory testing, including routine parasitology. Liaise with external stakeholders, including external vet practices, specialists, suppliers, etc
Requirements
? MRCVS status (essential)
? Experience in zoo or wildlife medicine is preferred, but strong applicants with varied experience in mixed practice (including exotics and farm animals) will also be considered
? Experience with ZIMS preferred
? Confident clinical and diagnostic skills
? Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
? Postgraduate qualifications in zoo, wildlife, or exotic animal medicine (CertAVP, MSc, or ECZM diplomate status) are desirable but not essential
? Weekend and bank holiday working will be required
