Provide high-quality one-to-one support for a pupil with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), ensuring access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum.
Work collaboratively with the class teacher, SENCo and external professionals to raise learning outcomes and promote pupil progress.
Foster independence, emotional regulation, self-esteem, and social inclusion for the pupil.
Prepare and deliver targeted interventions and personalised learning activities in line with Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) objectives.
Liaise sensitively and effectively with parents, carers and relevant agencies to support consistent approaches and communication.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
Deliver structured learning activities and specialist interventions as directed by the teacher or SENCo.
Adapt resources, materials and teaching strategies to meet individual learning styles and sensory, emotional, or communication needs.
Use effective behaviour regulation and de-escalation techniques in line with the pupil's individual behaviour support plan.
Provide detailed feedback to the class teacher and SENCo on progress, engagement and well-being.
Support inclusion by facilitating positive peer interactions and participation in class and wider school life.
Promote and model positive relationships and communication skills.
Use assistive technology or communication aids (where appropriate) to enhance access to learning.
Supervise the pupil safely during unstructured times, transitions and off-site activities.
Maintain accurate records of interventions, observations and progress in line with school policies.
Planning and Assessment
Contribute to the development and review of the pupil's EHCP targets and personalised plans.
Plan, prepare and review learning activities that meet specific learning and sensory needs.
Support the assessment of pupil progress through observation, evidence collection and feedback.
Contribute to the preparation of differentiated resources and environments that support independence and sensory regulation.
Working with Colleagues and Professionals
Work closely with the class teacher, SENCo and external professionals (e.g. Speech and Language Therapist, Educational Psychologist, Occupational Therapist) to implement specialist programmes.
Communicate effectively with parents and carers under the direction of the SENCo or class teacher.
Support collaborative working within the SEND team to ensure consistent strategies and approaches across school.
Share expertise and contribute to staff development on strategies for supporting pupils with SEND.
Whole-School Organisation, Strategy and Development
Contribute to the implementation of the school's SEND policy and provision.
Support a culture of inclusion, respect and high aspirations for all learners.
Participate in whole-school initiatives that promote well-being and equality of opportunity.
Health, Safety and Safeguarding
Promote the safety, welfare and emotional well-being of the pupil at all times.
Follow all safeguarding and child protection procedures in accordance with Keeping Children Safe in Education*. Maintain awareness of medical, sensory or behavioural risks, and follow individual care or risk management plans.
Administer basic first aid or medical support (if trained and required).
Professional Development
Engage in regular professional development related to SEND and specialist areas (e.g. autism, communication, SEMH, or sensory processing).
Reflect on personal practice and seek feedback to improve professional effectiveness.
Participate in performance appraisal and contribute to whole-school training and initiatives.

Uphold the values, vision and ethos of the school at all times.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when dealing with sensitive information.
