We're looking for a qualified Accountant to join our Finance team. If you have experience of capital accounting within a Local Authority context and want to join a friendly, hard working team, supporting the work of the National Park Authority, we'd love to hear from you!

What's it like to work here?

Our small and friendly team cover full range of financial services you would expect at a National Park Authority. Although we operate in line with the CIPFA codes, as a relatively small body, the scale and complexity of our asset base and treasury is relatively modest. It would be preferable to have the experience of capital accounting in a Local Authority, this is not essential if you can demonstrate the technical ability from other sectors and a commitment to develop the Local Authority specific skills.

We operate a hybrid way of working combining working from home and days at our office base at Wayfaring House, Kendal. Our people are passionate about the landscape and proud of the work we do, looking after it and helping people enjoy it.

The role

Your main duties and responsibilities will be to:

Manage and deliver the capital accounting cycle for the Authority, including liaison with valuers and external auditors as required. Act as finance business partner for the capital programme, including monitoring approved schemes, annual aggregation of the programme (including funding) and provision of advice around financing options within the provisions of the CIPFA Prudential Code. Design and embed new procedures and processes corporately, to ensure efficient and accurate financial reporting. Act as lead officer in relation to maintenance and review of the Treasury Management policy framework including the Prudential Code. Undertake a variety of financially based projects in support of the Finance Team's service delivery. Be the key internal advisor on technical accounting changes and managing the implementation of associated changes to processes.

About you

This opportunity would ideally suit someone who's a technically strong, CIPFA qualified accountant with experience of capital accounting in local government. Being a team player and problem solver are also key attributes; being able to work effectively with colleagues is essential and we are looking for someone who can lead the Authority's response to future technical accounting changes, for example, the recent changes in lease accounting. As noted, although it would be preferable to have the experience of capital accounting in a Local Authority, this is not essential if you can demonstrate the technical ability from another sector and commitment to develop these skills.

Please read the attached role profile for the full person specification on this post.
