This is a unique opportunity to take on a leading role within the development of our newly established Adaptive Learning Provision (ALP) providing structured, targeted support for students who are at risk of disengagement from mainstream education. This includes students with persistent literacy difficulties, high rates of truancy, emotional-based school avoidance (EBSA) and/or challenges in maintaining positive relationships with staff.
We seek an experienced Teaching Assistant who is committed to supporting students both from within our school community and across the city who find accessing full-time, mainstream education a real challenge. This role will be based in our new Adaptive Learning Provision (ALP), leading and supporting students' learning within a supportive, nurturing environment that re-engages them with learning, with the ultimate aim of reintegration into full-time mainstream education. Our ALP will be supporting a cohort of up to 10 students each school term from years 8-9.
Alongside the support of a talented and experienced team, you will have the resources necessary to bring about real change and impact the lives of our students. This is an opportunity to play an integral role within our inclusion strategy and developing a curriculum offer that meets the needs of some of our most vulnerable learners and is ideal for those aspiring to other leadership positions in SEND or educational support more widely.
You will take a leading role in preparing and delivering intervention sessions that include:
Topic (Cultural Studies) - students will study a different country each week, exploring geography, traditions, and cultural capital.
Active Engagement - A collaborative effort led by Alternative Provision Team Leader and support staff, featuring cooking, gardening, crafts, and physical activities that relate to the weekly country focus.
Tutor Time - students will read current news articles, identify key subject-specific terms, and expand their vocabulary through contextual learning.
Alongside this work you will work closely with student families and key professionals to ensure relationships are managed continuously and effectively.
The successful candidate will ultimately work with colleagues within our provision towards achieving our core aims:
Reigniting student engagement with education through a literacy-driven curriculum.
Fostering positive relationships and emotional resilience via a consistent, supportive staffing model.
Providing intensive, tailored academic and social support in a small group setting.
Enabling students to return to mainstream lessons with the skills and confidence required to thrive at their 'home' school.
At Blatchington Mill School we welcome applications from all parts of our community as we aspire to have a staff body that is representative of our student intake.
Blatchington Mill School is committed to safeguarding our students; we expect all staff and volunteers to support this commitment. Criminal record checks will be carried out and a full, enhanced DBS clearance is required for all positions
.
Applications are encouraged from black and ethnic minority candidates, as these groups are under-represented on the school's staff
.
(Race Relations Act sections 35-38 apply).
