Additional Needs Tutor / Senior Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead

(Senior DDSL)

Salary: 29,600 FTE (19,672.62 actual based on 30 hours/week, 39 weeks/year)

Reports to: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

Location: Multi-site (Old Town, Town Centre, Gorse Hill, Stanton Park and off-site locations)

Hours: 30 hours per week (part-time or full-time considered)

Purpose of the Role



This combined role brings together responsibilities as an Additional Needs Tutor

supporting pupils with complex SEMH & SEND needs, and as the organisation's Senior

Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (Senior DDSL) providing high-level safeguarding

leadership across all AP sites.

As an Additional Needs Tutor, the postholder will deliver high-quality academic tutoring,

pastoral support and behaviour management to ensure students reach their potential.

As Senior Deputy DSL, the postholder will act as the DSL's second-in-command, lead on

complex safeguarding cases, supervise safeguarding staff, and ensure robust safeguarding

culture, consistency and compliance across the organisation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Safeguarding Leadership & Case Management

? Act as the first point of escalation for Deputy DSLs and staff for all safeguarding

concerns.

? Lead and coordinate responses to complex cases including exploitation, contextual

safeguarding, EHE concerns, emotional wellbeing crises, and children with

multi-agency plans.

? Attend Child Protection Conferences, Core Groups, TAF meetings, MASH

consultations and other multi-agency forums.

? Ensure accurate and timely recording on CPOMS, Capsule and internal systems,

including chronologies and actions.

? Advise staff on thresholds, risk indicators and early help processes.

? Provide high-level safeguarding advice, challenge and guidance to staff and leaders.

2. Deputising for the DSL

? Act as DSL in their absence, making senior safeguarding decisions.

? Support implementation of statutory safeguarding duties under:

? Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE)

? Working Together to Safeguard Children

? Local safeguarding board procedures

? Ensure safeguarding messages, expectations and updates are effectively

communicated across all centres.

3. Safeguarding Quality Assurance & Compliance

? Conduct safeguarding audits, case file reviews and practice observations in centres.

? Oversee compliance with safer recruitment, including shortlisting, interviewing,

referencing, DBS checks and SCR monitoring.

? Provide analysis of themes, patterns, and emerging risks to the DSL/SLT.

? Support policy updates and ensure new processes are embedded across teams.

4. Safeguarding Training, Supervision & Staff

Development

? Deliver safeguarding training during induction, Friday CPD and refresher cycles.

? Provide professional safeguarding supervision to Deputy DSLs and centre leads.

? Offer reflective debriefs after difficult or traumatic safeguarding incidents.

? Support trauma-informed practice across the organisation.

5. Partnership Working

? Build strong relationships with:

? Social care

? MASH

? Police

? CAMHS / mental health teams

? Schools and multi-agency partners

? Ensure timely information sharing and coordinated safeguarding planning.

6. Additional Needs Tutor

Responsibilities

Teaching, Learning & Academic Support

? Plan and deliver 1:1 and small group Functional Skills Maths/English sessions (up to

FS Level 2).

? Provide tailored interventions based on individual needs, EHCP outcomes and ILPs.

? Mark work alongside students, providing constructive feedback and

stretch/challenge.

SEND, SEMH & Behaviour

? Support pupils with complex SEMH and SEND needs using trauma-informed and

relational approaches.

? Manage behaviour using de-escalation strategies.

? Maintain a safe and structured learning environment.

Planning, Assessment & Record Keeping

? Maintain live lesson plans, ILPs, student targets and end-of-term reports.

? Record attendance, engagement and safeguarding information accurately and

promptly.

? Use assessment data and a range of resources to support academic progress.

Professional Communication

? Communicate effectively with parents/carers, social workers, external agencies and

school staff.

? Work collaboratively with Centre Managers, Senior Tutors and colleagues across all

centres.

Flexibility & Centre Support

? Work flexibly across all three centres or off-site locations.

? Adapt to timetable changes and student needs.

? Assist with exam preparation, vocational projects, homework support and

engagement activities.

7. General Expectations & Duties

? Uphold safeguarding, health and safety, and GDPR at all times.

? Participate in weekly CPD, supervision and appraisal.

? Engage fully with the Quality and Accuracy Framework.

? Contribute to a positive, supportive and professional organisational culture.

? Undertake additional reasonable duties in line with organisational needs.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

? Experience working with vulnerable young people, ideally with SEND/SEMH.

? Completed DSL/Safeguarding Lead training (or willingness to complete immediately).

? Strong understanding of thresholds, early help, CP procedures & multi-agency

working.

? Ability to plan and deliver Maths/English to Functional Skills level.

? Excellent written/verbal communication and report writing skills.

? Ability to manage behaviour and build strong, trusting relationships.

? Organisational skills and ability to manage conflicting priorities.

? Confident in Google Workspace, data entry and administrative systems.

? Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

? Own transport.

Desirable

? Experience supervising safeguarding staff.

? Trauma-informed practice training.

? Multi-site or alternative provision experience.

? A relevant qualification in education, youth work or social care.

We are now seeking a highly skilled and passionate Additional Needs Tutor / Senior

Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead to join our safeguarding leadership team while

also delivering impactful teaching and mentoring to our students.

The Role

This is a dual role combining:

- Additional Needs Tutor

You will deliver 1:1 and small group Functional Skills Maths and English sessions, support

pupils with SEMH/SEND needs, plan and deliver personalised interventions, and track pupil

progress.

- Senior Deputy DSL

You will support the DSL with:

? Complex safeguarding casework

? Multi-agency meetings

? Oversight of Deputy DSLs

? Quality assurance checks

? Safeguarding supervision

? Policy development and safeguarding training

This is a leadership-level safeguarding role requiring strong judgement, professional

curiosity and confidence.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Qualifications & Experience

? Completed DSL training OR willingness to complete immediately

? Experience in education, youth work, social care, or safeguarding roles

? Strong understanding of KCSIE, thresholds and multi-agency processes
