Background Information
Our Recent Journey
The Waste into Wellbeing project runs a weekly Kendal People's Cafe, 3 weekly food larders, and a community based cooking programme. Through these activities we are delivering wellbeing at both the individual and community levels, through creating friendships, improving cooking skills, nutrition and diets, and the improving mental health of our customers and volunteers.
Through its delivery, WIW has raised its profile in Kendal and surrounding villages, and is now recognised not only for its high performing social and environmental impact, but for its professional operation, stringent documented procedures and supportive volunteer community.
Developing Partnerships
During 2023 alone, WIW not only partnered with around 10 local retailers and food business to collect surplus from, but delivered projects alongside other local groups and organisations, such as NHS, Kendal College, Oaklea Trust, Sandgate School, Kendal Climate Jury, Simply Repair, Future Fixers, Kirkbarrow, Burneside, Sandylands, Hallgarth and Staveley Residents Associations, Kendal Refugee Network, Cumbria Adult Services, Action for Children and a host of schools, faith groups and community centres to ensure our support reaches those in need. In addition we support annual festivals such as Kendal Torchlight Carnival and Kendal Unity Festival.
Raising its Profile
In recent years, activities delivered by WIW have been recognised in local and national press, including Sunday Telegraph, National Refugee Forum, BBC Radio Cumbria, ITV Border News, Cumbria Life and Cumbria Crack. In 2018 it received the local Wainwright Award for innovation from the Town Council and this year it was again chosen as the Mayor of Kendal's chosen charity project for the second time.
Managing Growth and Securing Premises
Over the last three years, the volume of surplus food intercepted by WiW has risen significantly, from 5 tonnes in 2020 during the pandemic to over 42 tonnes in 2024
Storage and processing facilities at Stricklandgate House didn't enable further growth: our
After 3 years of searching, WiW has now moved into its own designated premises. The site of the old United Reform Church has been purchased by private owner, Bruce Withington, with the vision of preserving and renovating the Church building and adjacent sports hall as a sustainability and community hub for the local area. With support from WiW and Kendal Town Council (KTC), the owner has formed a CIC to provide leadership and governance for the development and running of the site, to be named The Eddington Kendal. A Heads of Agreement confirms that the ownership of the sports hall, where WiW is to call home, will in due course pass to the CIC. The three partners, WiW, KTC and the Eddington Kendal CIC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to set out the terms of the partnership. Not only will The Eddington provide space for WiW's operation to grow, it will provide an opportunity for other climate conscious and community focussed activities, responding to the needs of Kendal's residents and the recommendations of Kendal Town Council's Climate Jury. WiW moved into the new premises at the end of June 2024 and has agreed a license for the next 3 years (with rent being funded by KTC).
WiW is an inclusive charity project which welcomes people from all walks of life, without a need to register or be referred. Our services reach some of the most vulnerable and socially isolated individuals in our communities, and our volunteer and placement opportunities provide training and support to a host of people, including vulnerable adults and young people.
In 2024, Waste into Wellbeing:
Hosted 38 cafes serving 1988 meals
Held 45 Lunch Bunch sessions serving 788 lunches to vulnerable elderly residents in partnership with NHS ICC team
Opened the larder 150 times, serving bags of groceries
Delivered a pilot outreach programme with more than 30 cooking events, reaching over 350 people and offering 11 student and young learner placements
Offered 6000 hours of volunteer opportunities to local residents
WiW employs two part-time paid contractors on a freelance basis: A Food Logistics Coordinator (fully funded through customer donations)
A Project Manager ( currently being advertised alongside this post)
A Kitchen Manager
WiW now has a cohort of 120 volunteers to support its delivery.
