Summary
The Team Leader is responsible for safely delivering the daily production plan in their area of the factory (e.g. CNC, Framing, Slabs, Assembly).
They lead a team of operators, owning
output, efficiency, quality, safety and housekeeping standards
. The Team Leader is accountable for their area's numbers every shift - understanding performance, taking action when it slips, and supporting the team to improve.
Key Responsibilities
1. Safety, Compliance & Housekeeping
Ensure a
safe working environment
at all times, complying with all H&S procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
Complete and record daily
safety and 5S/housekeeping checks
; fix issues or escalate promptly.
Make sure all team members wear correct
PPE
and use machinery, tools and handling equipment safely.
Stop work and escalate immediately where there is any
unsafe act or condition
.
2. People & Team Leadership
Line-manage operators in the area, including
1:1s, coaching and feedback
.
Manage
attendance, absence, timekeeping and conduct
, following HR procedures.
Support recruitment, onboarding and probation reviews for new starters.
Build a
skills matrix
for the area; identify gaps and put
training and cross-training plans
in place.
Lead daily
team huddles
, ensuring everyone understands the plan, priorities and standards for the shift.
3. Output, Efficiency & Short Interval Control
Own the delivery of the
daily and weekly production plan
for the area.
Use
Short Interval Control (SIC)
to track performance through the shift (e.g. hourly/2-hourly checks).
Monitor and update
Plan vs Actual (PvA)
boards - volumes, efficiency, downtime - and take action when the area falls behind.
Reallocate people, adjust methods, and call for support (maintenance, materials, quality) to recover performance.
Identify and remove day-to-day blockers to flow (materials, information, tools).
4. Quality & Right-First-Time
Ensure
Standard Work Instructions (SWIs)
and quality standards are followed at all times.
Carry out and record required
in-process quality checks
; quarantine and report defects.
Lead
first-level root cause analysis
on quality issues in the area and implement agreed countermeasures.
Coach the team to achieve
Right-First-Time
targets and reduce rework, scrap and customer complaints.
5. Data, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
Maintain accurate data for: output, downtime, scrap, rework, labour and overtime in the area.
Prepare simple
end-of-shift reports
for the Production Shift Manager, highlighting performance, issues and actions.
Participate in weekly performance reviews, presenting the area's performance, issues and improvement ideas.
Lead small
continuous improvement activities
(5S, SMED, visual management, standard work updates) with the team.
Support trials of
new equipment, layouts or processes
, ensuring the team are trained and feedback is captured.

Doors/units produced vs plan (per shift & per week)
Efficiency / OEE (as defined for the area)
Right-First-Time %, scrap and rework levels
Safety incidents / near misses, 5S audit scores
Labour utilisation, overtime and agency usage in the area
Attendance and skills coverage vs plan
Experience & Skills
Essential
Experience leading a small team in a
manufacturing or production environment
.
Proven track record of hitting
output and quality targets
.
Confident using
basic data and reports
(Excel / ERP screens / PvA boards) to make decisions.
Strong communication skills; able to give clear instructions and constructive feedback.
Good understanding of
H&S and quality requirements
in a factory setting.
Desirable
Experience with
short interval control, lean tools or 5S
.
Experience in woodworking, joinery, doors or similar high-variety production.
