What You'll Do



The Application Engineer is responsible for oversight on design and implementation of products assigned to their team. You will take user stories and new features from idea to production unattended. You will actively manage and escalate risk and customer-impacting issues within the day-to-day role to management.



How You'll Do It

Analyze, design, code, test, and deploy new user stories and product features with high quality (security, reliability, operations) to production. Understands the software development lifecycle and leverages critical thinking skills to properly evaluate features and functionality.

Guides early-career engineers by providing learning tasks as well as work related tasks, directs the work of emerging talent, and helps them continue to grow in their technical skillset through mentorship.

Has an oversight on application, system, and architecture design decisions and guides team to achieve key results for products assigned to them.

Remediates issues using engineering principles and creates proactive design solutions for potential failures to ensure high reliability of technical solutions.

Achieves team commitments (and influence others to do the same) through collaboration with other engineers, architects, product owners and data scientists.

Contributes to and leads technology communities of practice at Discover in areas of design-thinking, tools/technology, agile software development, security, architecture and/or data.

Creates and enforces IT standards within the system/application infrastructure and compatibility with the architecture of the platform.



Minimum Qualifications



At a minimum, here's what we need from you:



Bachelors Computer Science, Engineering, Informatics, Information Security, Information Technology or related

Experience in Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related

Internal applicants only:

technical proficiency of competent on the Dreyfus engineering scale.

Bonus Points If You Have

Strong hands-on technical lead with programming languages like Java and Python services and building highly available environment using proper design patterns

Proven experience in software development methodologies

Strong analytical skills and ability to multi-task

Experience as part of an Agile engineering or development team

Strong hands-on experience and understanding of working in a cloud environment such as AWS

Experience with EMR (Elastic Map Reduce), Spark

Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins

Experience with the following technologies:

SpringBoot, Gradle, Terraform, Ansible, GitHub/GitFlow, PCF/OCP/Kubernetes technologies, Artifactory, IaC

Experience with Test Driven Development (TDD)

Experience with Behavior Driven Development (BDD, Cucumber test framework)

Experience writing unit and service level tests to ensure adequate code coverage (JUnits)

Drools

Proven skills in high availability and scalability design, as well as performance monitoring

Experience developing and implementing API service architecture

Experience in working with a relational database

Experience provisioning infrastructure with Terraform and Cloud Formation

Understanding of messaging systems like MQ, Rabbit MQ, Kafka, or Kinesis

Effective communication and collaboration skills to be able to partner with business stakeholders and other technical teams

AWS and Java Certifications
