Birmingham City University is a dynamic and diverse academic community, with a strong track record of delivering excellent education.

Our city south campus in Edgbaston, Birmingham places us firmly at the heart of the city and close to the many institutions and social constituencies with whom we work closely. We embrace a practice-led, knowledge-based approach to our teaching, which is research-informed.

The Social Work subject area is seeking to appoint an Assistant Lecturer in Social Work. You will be a registered Social Worker, holding a degree with experience in Social Work practice and education.

This role will involve teaching (which includes assessment and marking of coursework) on a range of courses in the subject area, as well as providing pastoral and academic support to our students.

We are particularly interested in people with a background in practice experience working with Adults and legal casework.

Birmingham City University has set out its vision for transforming the prospects of individuals, organisations and society through excellence in practice-based education, research and knowledge exchange and our Social Work courses are key contributors to this.

At Birmingham City University we are proud to be an equal opportunities employer. All staff are expected to understand and enact the University's commitment to ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion in our employment practice and in all that we do. This commitment is enshrined in our Core Values and is detailed in our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Employment Policy. The University values and celebrates the diversity of our staff and students; we welcome people from the many different backgrounds and life experiences that reflect the students and the citizens we serve. We are committed to equality of opportunity for all staff and actively encourage unique contributions, in particular from under-represented groups in respect of age, disability, sex, gender or gender identity, ethnicity, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation or transgender status.

The College are particularly interested in hearing from applicants from diverse backgrounds and those with disabilities within our society, as we seek to ensure our course team includes representatives of our diverse student group.

The selection process will include a presentation; a meeting with a group of staff from the College and experts by experience, and an interview with a panel.

If you wish to know more about this role, and for an informal discussion please contact David Childs Head of College of Education and Social Work on email: David.Childs@bcu.ac.uk, email or MS Teams discussion can be arranged.

Interview: 14th/15th July 2025.
