Assistant Manager
to work closely with the owners and strengthen our management team.
The Role
This is a
hands-on Assistant Manager position
within a busy food retail environment. You will support the day-to-day running of the business, lead the team on the shop floor, and act as manager-on-duty when required.
Hours:
38 hours per week
Includes a minimum of one weekend day
Typical shift: 8:30am-5:00pm
Flexibility required to cover holidays and sickness at short notice as required
Key Responsibilities
Working closely with the owners to support daily operations and business priorities
Delivering outstanding customer service and leading by example
Managing and motivating the team on shift
Training new starters and supporting ongoing staff development
People management, including absence reporting and day-to-day supervision
Acting as manager-on-duty in the owners' absence
Ensuring excellent standards of cleanliness, food hygiene, and health & safety
Completing food hygiene and compliance paperwork
Stock control support, including checking deliveries, monitoring stock levels and minimising waste
Supporting ordering and flagging shortages or issues
Maintaining strong product availability and visual presentation
Operating tills and handling cash responsibly
Preparing food and drink, including coffee, sandwiches, pies and bakery products
Liaising closely with the bakery team
Handling customer queries and complaints professionally
Opening and closing the shop, including end-of-day procedures and securing the premises
Supporting rotas and coordinating shift cover when needed
Identifying sales opportunities, promotions and upselling where appropriate
Supporting seasonal changes, new product launches and busy trading periods
About You
Previous experience in a supervisory or assistant management role (food retail or hospitality preferred)
Strong customer service and sales awareness
Confident people manager with good communication skills
Good knowledge of food hygiene and compliance standards
Organised, reliable and able to work under pressure
Happy to be hands-on in all areas of the business
