Are you interested in developing a career in environmental monitoring and research?

We are looking for Assistant Scientist with a real passion for tackling climate change and an interest in developing a career in science with a focus on environmental measurement and metrology. You will be based at our Teddington site in our active Emissions and Atmospheric Metrology group.

Through practical and theory-based learning, and on the job training to improve your understanding and further your development, you will be able to use your technical skills on a variety of work. This includes responsibility for the maintenance and calibration of scientific equipment, supporting experimental work in the laboratory, field work on industrial sites, data analysis, report writing and delivering research projects. Offsite work with occasional travel and overnight stays may be required.

In this role, you will be able to:

  • Work with the laboratory manager to prepare sampling media, and repair, calibrate /maintain test equipment.
  • Support experimental work in the laboratory
  • Maintain records in accordance with our accredited Quality Management System (QMS)
  • Handle shipments of samples to analytical laboratories
  • Adhere to company and client quality and health and safety protocols
  • Operate sampling and test equipment to measure emission levels and atmospheric gases in accordance with prescribed procedures
  • Support field sampling and monitoring activities and assist with the set-up of equipment
  • Support the group with research projects and activities at the NPL facility
  • Maintain and ensure high safety standards in accordance with our system and customer site specific requirements

About You

We are looking to recruit a motivated scientist or technician into our environmental and atmospheric laboratories and expanding field capabilities. The role will involve a balance of experimental work in both the laboratory and field, which includes research and customer facing activities. The successful candidate will have good communication skills and will work as part of a team.

The ideal candidate will have one or more of the following skills and qualifications:
  • As a minimum, A Levels in a science, maths or similar subject or equivalent practical experience or qualifications
  • Be a self-motivated individual with a passion for science and learning about metrology
  • Be organised and methodical in your work and able to precisely follow set procedures.
  • You are able to communicate clearly and collaborate with colleagues in your team
  • Good technical aptitude and computer literacy
  • Understand the value of providing good customer service to both internal and external customers, wanting to meet and exceed customer expectations through delivering high quality work with proactive communications
