Sense Education is looking for a dedicated Autism Support Worker to join a specialist SEND school in Whitehaven. In this role, you will provide support to students with additional needs such as autism, helping them access education and develop essential skills in a structured, nurturing environment. You will work closely with the teaching team to implement tailored support strategies that enhance students' learning experiences and well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
Support students with additional needs both in the classroom and during social activities
Assist with the implementation of individual education plans (IEPs) and behaviour management strategies
Provide guidance and emotional support, helping students build confidence and independence
Assist with communication needs using strategies such as PECS or Makaton (training available)
Support students in developing social skills and managing challenging behaviours
Work collaboratively with the wider SEND team to monitor progress and adapt support plans as needed
Key Requirements:
Experience supporting students with autism or other special educational needs
A patient, compassionate, and flexible approach to working with children
Ideally, a Teaching Assistant qualification or other relevant certifications e.g. Health and Social Care, Childcare
Knowledge of communication tools such as PECS or Makaton (training provided if needed)
Ability to work as part of a team and contribute to a positive, supportive environment
A genuine passion for making a difference in the lives of students with autism and additional needs

Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. We undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available.
