Elklan was established in 1999 by two speech and language therapists. The core business is to train education practitioners so that they can support children and young people with a wide range of learning, speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). Since 2003, Elklan has trained over 4,000 speech and language therapists and specialist teachers who have cascaded training to over 90,000 practitioners. These include staff working across pre-school, primary, and secondary education settings helping to build a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all children and young people.
We are looking for an experienced bookkeeper to join our team. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting the Elklan team, and ensuring efficient day-to-day accounting operations. This role demands strong proficiency in Xero and accounts payable processes.
Duties
Respond to daily queries from external customers, stakeholders, and internal staff.
Reconcile bank transactions daily and allocate incoming payments accurately.
Notify relevant team members of invoices that have been paid.
Ensure timely and accurate payments to suppliers.
Follow up on overdue or unpaid invoices.
Prepare and send customer account statements as required.
Reconcile internal payments, receipts and invoices.
Maintain and update contact and payment information for suppliers and clients.
Investigate and resolve payment discrepancies and anomalies.
Use accounting software such as Xero to manage day-to-day bookkeeping tasks.
Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards and financial regulations.
Prepare quarterly VAT returns and support other financial reporting requirements.
About You
Proven experience as a bookkeeper or in a similar role.
Proficiency in Xero is essential; familiarity with Stripe, SagePay/Evalon is highly desirable.
Strong understanding of accounts payable procedures and bookkeeping best practices.
Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
GCSE (or equivalent) including Maths and English, Grade C / 4 or above.
A qualification in accounting, bookkeeping, or finance is preferred but not essential.
Proficient in MS Office (i.e. Excel, Word, Outlook).
Strong organisational skills and the ability to work well under pressure.
Confident and self-motivated who can demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills.
