Role Purpose:
The NPG is looking for a dynamic, creative and commercially-minded professional to lead on the launch and development of a brand licensing programme for the Gallery. Reporting to the Director of Commercial and Operations this new position will deal with high-level external and internal senior stakeholders, will have a creative eye, strong negotiation, communication and presentation skills, a thorough understanding of IP, copyright and trademarks plus proven experience of growing an international brand licensing programme. The core role will be tasked with:
Leading the development and delivery of the Gallery's brand licensing strategy aligning it with the Gallery's vision and values and 10 year plan.
Researching and securing new business opportunities in the UK and overseas, identifying potential licensees with a strong brand alignment to build a portfolio that is wide-ranging and coherent.
Work with designers to create a range of compelling design options, style sheets, mood boards and brand guides across a variety of product categories using key brand values and with an eye on emerging trends.
Oversee all creative proposals and potential licensees to ensure a strong brand fit, managing contract negotiations to secure the best deal for the Gallery while meeting our guidelines on quality standards, EDI and sustainability.
Coordinate and grow the licensing programme implementing resources and systems as required, working closely with internal and external stakeholders, including potential agents, consultants and partners.
Protect and grow the brand internationally.
Key Accountabilities:
Regularly review all existing licenses and agreements in place.
Where appropriate, identify and engage additional resource from licensing agents and consultants to represent the brand in local territories or in specialist categories or sectors.
Ensure our licensees, agents and partners are fully engaged with the NPG by building strong relationships with regular meetings and updates to maximize opportunities for further product development and expansion.
Plan and present a fully costed licensing strategy and business plan to multiple forums including Trading Company Board, partners, internal teams and other stakeholder
Commercial
Ensure accurate royalty reporting, taking responsibility for achieving KPIs and budgets.
Use market insights to identify and evaluate commercial brand partnership opportunities across all categories.
Seek new leads and build a pipeline of potential brand partners, with the support of any appointed agents or directly, to complement and support the programme.
Lead negotiations on key commercial terms with new license partners alongside renewals with existing partners.
In conjunction with the Director of Commercial and Operations, write and agree a three year budget and quarterly financial reforecasting.
Liaise with the Finance team where appropriate to ensure that all royalty reports are received and invoiced promptly, chasing any overdue accounts.
Contract management
Administer and manage all licensee contracts ensuring products are of the highest quality and payments, artwork and distribution are compliant.
Manage relationships with new and existing brand partners, ensuring a joined-up approach towards building value and long-term cooperation.
Lead on ethical trading compliance and sustainability analysis developing guidelines and helping to develop future policy.
Build licensee and agent relationships with online and in-person brand immersion and site visits.
Manage artwork, product approval and quality control, developing systems to ensure a smooth and comprehensive sign off process and archive of the development journey.
Marketing
Work with the Comms team to place regular news in the trade media in order to build profile and support commercial partners.
Identify successful products with the potential to be submitted for awards.
Nurture successful relationships with retail buying team to develop the licensing programme.
Oversee the booking, design, build, marketing and promotion of trade show stands to promote the licensing programme at industry events such as Brand Licensing Europe, Toy Fair and Spring Fair.
Manage the launch of products, collaborations and promotions providing relevant marketing support from the NPG
Other
Provide line management to members of the Brand Licensing team as it grows (no direct reports initially).
Research and secure relationships with key personality and image rights holders and register and manage trademarks to widen commercial opportunities.
Liaise with internal stakeholders such as Curatorial, Development and Communications teams to identify and develop future opportunities that could benefit the licensing programme.
Support and build strategic relationships between licensees/partners and other NPG departments, e.g. Retail, Membership, Development, Learning, Events etc in order to maximise cross-fertilisation opportunities and improve the visitor and customer engagement with the Gallery.
Create and regularly update a set of packaged creative content e,g style sheets, mood boards and brand guides etc across a variety of product categories and themes and a curated bank of assets for licensees and agents to access for commercial interpretation and application.
Work closely with the NPG Buying team to test and grow licensed product ranges that may be relevant for NPG Retail.
Keep up to date about developments in the licencing market and emerging opportunities.

Key Experience, Skills and Criteria:
Proven experience of planning, developing and delivering a brand licensing strategy or at least five years' experience working on a brand licensing programme for a licensor, licensee or within a heritage institution.
Strategic vision for business development in the licensing sector.
Experience with brand representation and trend analysis.
Knowledge of design and product development processes.
Proficiency in managing legal and financial responsibilities.
Excellent knowledge of IP rights, copyright and trademarks.
