We are now hiring a
Business Trainer
to deliver an engaging and practical
self-employment and enterprise course
to men in custody at HMP Onley.
About the Role
You will deliver a one-week, face-to-face course
once per month
, over a
6-month contract
, with
paid training days
and potential
additional paid admin days
as needed.
Each 5-day programme (Monday-Friday) will support a small group of men approaching release to explore self-employment as a viable pathway.
The course includes topics such as:
Developing a business idea and creating a viable business plan
Registering a business and setting up business banking
Marketing, social media, and websites
Tax, VAT, and basic accounting
Funding options and quoting for work
Building confidence, presentation, and entrepreneurial mindset
You'll support learners to create a complete business plan, develop a CV, and understand their next steps after release.
Key Details
Delivery:
5 full days per cohort (one week/month), 08:00-17:00 with 30 min lunch
Admin Days:
Paid admin days may be scheduled to complete learner records or reports
Training:
Paid training and induction days will be provided in advance of delivery
Cohorts:
6 groups across 6 months (max. 12 learners per group)
Location:
On-site at HMP Onley (Category C resettlement prison)
Pay:
18 per hour (37.5 hours/week = 675 per delivery week, plus paid training/admin)
What You'll Do
Deliver an inspiring and structured business start-up course
Guide participants in creating business plans and CVs
Tailor delivery to meet diverse learning needs, including those with additional support needs
Maintain Individual Learning Plans and learner portfolios
Liaise with prison staff and Bhuku's central team to ensure smooth delivery
Support occasional learner follow-up or reporting activity
Attend security training and comply with prison protocols
About You
Essential:
Strong understanding of small business start-up and self-employment
Experience delivering training, mentoring or workshops to adults
Excellent communication, organisation and group facilitation skills
Confident working in structured environments with vulnerable learners
Able to pass Enhanced Level 2 prison vetting (including 5-year UK address history)
Reliable and committed to the full 7-month delivery period
Desirable:
Experience working in a prison or secure environment
Teaching or training qualification (e.g. PTLLS, AET, CertEd)
Knowledge of trauma-informed practice or SEND support
Background in enterprise coaching or mentoring
