Chief Marketing Officer

London, United Kingdom

Job Description

This is a rare opportunity to have a massive impact by playing a transformational role in an already well established company on the brink of a breakout success.

Our latest puzzle and decorate game will shortly pass $10m revenue two months after launch making it our most successful game launch to date and on track to be the top grossing car game globally. We\xe2\x80\x99ll shortly be launching - the first franchise expansion to our award winning 2021 music game which has been played by over 150m people, grossing $120m making it the definitive genre leader. And our strategy game is growing, having had its best year since 2018.

TLDR; The CMO will lead marketing, brand, PR, customer retention, research, customer service and community efforts. Crucially, you will help us transition from a business that is focused primarily on game development and performance marketing to one where brand and proposition development are of strategic importance. You\xe2\x80\x99ll do this whilst respecting and evolving the strong heritage of performance based user acquisition, community and player led development that has gotten Space Ape to where it is today.

Space Ape\xe2\x80\x99s strengths in marketing include:

  • Highly sophisticated UA team, data and creative infrastructure. We\xe2\x80\x99ve been on the cutting edge of mobile performance marketing since 2012, and have an experienced team of media buyers and a marketing art production team that can deliver world-class creative content via a combination of internal resources and external partnerships.
  • World leader at live ops, community and operating games as a service for years. This is core to everything we do, and provides an amazing platform for brand partnerships, CRM and re-engagement.
  • Amazing developer brand and platform relationships. Beatstar was one of the most featured apps of 2022 and Space Ape is one of the most respected studios within the games industry.
  • Passionate fanbase. 150m people have played our games and we have generated over a million pre-registrations twice.
  • Experience working with external brands. We have a long standing partnership with Hasbro on our Transformers game, and proven ability to engage the biggest music brands. Additionally we have worked with some of the worlds biggest games and media IP over the years on various games that didn\xe2\x80\x99t make the cut, and despite that have remained trusted partners.
  • International experience. We have experience localising and culturalizing our games in Japan and major Tier 1 markets (excluding China).
Some of our weaknesses that we\xe2\x80\x99d be looking to a CMO to help fill include:
  • Brand and IP development. We have amazingly talented artists and create extremely high quality products and marketing assets, but aspire to be able to create iconic brands.
  • Product and marketing strategy. Historically we have been very thoughtful about the games we choose to make but are now at a scale where our slate and marketing decisions require a more strategic approach.
  • Research. We have a fledgling user and market research function that has proven incredibly valuable and we\xe2\x80\x99re keen to develop it further.
  • Studio leadership with scaling experience. We\xe2\x80\x99ve had a very thin management layer with services organised primarily around game teams. This was by design to cultivate the kind of autonomy and entrepreneurial spirit that got us where we are today, and has resulted in some amazing home grown leadership talent and a lean, highly motivated, organisation (just check out our
). However as we scale we\xe2\x80\x99d benefit from bringing in leaders who have seen this before and have experience building out strong centralised and marketing functions, coaching and mentoring. * Sustained global scale. We are accustomed to spending a few tens of millions of dollars launching games in primarily tier 1 western markets. We now have a game that can justify hundreds of millions in annual spend, globally, which is a whole different ball game.

Requirements
  • Proven experience in leadership roles, team building, developing leadership talent and mentoring all facets of a marketing org.
  • Experience managing $100m+ budgets, allocating resources, driving revenue growth and maximising ROI.
  • A passion for marketing and mass communications: Able to bring inspiration and case studies to the team from outside the category to keep us ahead of the curve when it comes to modern marketing strategies and leveraging creativity to drive outsized results.
  • Experience in developing brand strategies and executing successful marketing campaigns globally.
  • Technical understanding of tracking and reporting systems to analyse and optimise marketing efforts.
  • Possesses strong analytical competencies and a data-driven mindset to drive informed decision-making.
  • Demonstrates exceptional problem-solving abilities and excellent organisational skills.
  • Highly focused on driving growth and achieving goals, with a results-oriented mindset.
  • Willingness to lead by example and actively engage in tasks as needed, exhibiting a "hands-on" approach.
  • Passion for Gaming: Exhibits a genuine passion for games, particularly in the mobile free-to-play (F2P) sector. Specific work experience in gaming, music, or entertainment media is a plus.
Benefits
  • Opportunity to join an established company on the brink of a massive break out, in a role that allows you to have demonstrable impact on the company and sector.
  • Compensation befitting an executive position at a growth company ($100m+ run rate, growing 10%+ per month).
  • Generous stock options package to align with ambitious growth objectives.
  • An award winning studio that has been crowned one of the
