About the Role

As the Shift Leader, you'll be the driving force during your shifts--creating structure, supporting your team, and delivering compassionate, consistent care to every young person. You'll lead by example, inspire your colleagues, and uphold essential standards in line with Children's Homes Regulations 2015 and Quality Standards.

This role is your gateway to meaningful leadership, ongoing development, and making a real difference in a young person's life.

Key Responsibilities

Young Person-Focused Support



Oversee and track progress on Placement Plans and Risk Assessments Lead engaging Keywork sessions with your assigned young people Empower young people to be actively involved in daily routines and decisions Support planning for education, contact arrangements, and care reviews Monitor behaviour and use trauma-informed techniques to promote emotional wellbeing

Team Leadership & Supervision



Lead 8-12 shifts each month, including sleep-ins Deliver clear handovers and delegate tasks efficiently Supervise and support a motivated team of Support Workers Onboard and mentor new and agency staff, setting them up for success Champion trauma-informed care and positive behaviour support

Safeguarding & Behaviour Monitoring



Report and escalate disclosures, incidents, or concerns promptly Complete thorough reports and lead team reflections after incidents Identify and mitigate safeguarding risks like CSE, absconding, or bullying Maintain detailed records of interventions, sanctions, and safeguarding logs Promote emotional wellbeing and online safety awareness

Record Keeping & Compliance



Ensure accurate daily logs, medication records, and hygiene documentation Regularly audit incident reports, keywork notes, and communications Review medication logs (MAR charts) and flag any issues immediately Manage responsibilities such as petty cash, food stock, and fire safety logs

Health, Safety & Environment



Participate in monthly audits and emergency drills Conduct safety equipment checks and maintain communal areas Uphold high cleanliness and safety standards during your shift Report and follow up on maintenance and repair needs

Communication & Reporting



Contribute actively to staff meetings and team planning Provide performance updates and support requests to the Deputy Manager Keep managers and external professionals informed on young people's progress

Learning, Reflection & Development



Complete all required training and refresher courses Lead reflective learning sessions after incidents Promote best practice during handovers and team meetings Support your team's understanding of care plans and key documentation

Operational Support



Help coordinate health, education, and social appointments Oversee petty cash and record shift spending carefully Assist with planning birthdays, outings, and cultural events Monitor and maintain household stock levels
What We're Looking For

Minimum 2 years' experience in residential childcare or a related field Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or working towards it) Strong leadership, communication, and team coordination skills Calm, child-centred, and resilient approach to care Confident understanding of safeguarding and trauma-informed practices Full UK driving licence preferred
