Job Overview


Normanton Town Council is looking for a friendly and enthusiastic Communications & Marketing Assistant to join our small team at Normanton Town Hall.

To help the Town Council promote its services, events and facilities through clear and effective communication. The postholder will deal with day-to-day enquiries from the public, councillors and local groups, keep the Council's website and social media up to date, and produce publicity materials such as posters, leaflets and reports. The role also includes marketing and managing bookings at the Town Hall and Woodhouse Community Centre, making sure enquiries are handled efficiently and booking income is recorded and invoiced correctly. The postholder will also assist with the set-up of Council events and activities, where some creativity may be required (e.g. preparing displays, dressing Santa's Grotto, or helping with decorations).

Responsibilities



This varied role will involve:

Communications



Deal with day-to-day enquiries from the public, councillors and local organisations by telephone, email and face-to-face. Keep the Council's website and social media up to date with news, events and information. Produce posters, leaflets, newsletters and graphics for reports in line with the Council's style. Assist with press releases, public notices and official communications. Help with basic communication needs, such as letters and notices.

Marketing & Bookings



Promote the Town Council's events, services and facilities. Market the Town Hall and Woodhouse Community Centre as venues for hire, using advertising such as social media, leaflets and posters. Manage the bookings process for both venues, ensuring enquiries are handled quickly and records are kept up to date. Log booking income, raise invoices, and liaise with the Town Clerk/RFO so that payments are collected and recorded correctly.

Events & Community Engagement



Assist with the set-up and delivery of Council events, which may include moving equipment, preparing displays, or adding creative touches (e.g. Santa's Grotto, decorations). Support small consultations, surveys and feedback exercises. Assist with the organisation of public meetings, drop-in sessions and community events. Build positive links with local community groups and organisations.

Administration



Keep accurate records, mailing lists and contact details for local media and community groups. Assist in preparing information for Council reports and committee papers. Provide general administrative support to the Town Clerk and colleagues when required. Ensure all communications and records are handled in line with GDPR and Council policies.

General



Work flexibly, including some evenings and weekends, to support Council events and activities. Act as a representative of the Town Council, providing a helpful and friendly service at all times. Follow all Council policies and procedures, including those relating to health & safety, equality and safeguarding. Take part in training as required to support the role. Carry out other reasonable duties as directed by the Town Clerk.

Skills



Good communication skills, both written and verbal. Confident dealing with people by telephone, email and face-to-face. Able to use social media and update websites. Organised and able to manage time and tasks effectively. Able to produce simple posters, leaflets and other publicity materials. Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office, Canva. Able to keep accurate records and follow procedures. Comfortable handling simple finance tasks (logging income, raising invoices). Willing to assist with setting up events, which may include some practical tasks and creative input. Friendly, approachable and professional when dealing with the public, councillors and colleagues. Willing to work flexibly, including some evenings and weekends. Able to work well as part of a small team.

Hours



Monday to Thursday 8am - 4pm

Friday 8am - 1pm

Occasional evening and weekend work for delivery of events

SCP 7-11 (26,403 - 28,142)
