Communications Officer

Sheffield, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Job description
As the 4th largest city in England, Sheffield is undergoing an exciting period of transformation, creating a thriving, sustainable region for the future while preserving its heritage and culture.

From improving accessibility, retail, leisure, housing, workspaces, transport infrastructure and public spaces to supporting more than 550,000 residents and thousands of businesses, there's never been a more exciting time to be a part of our ambitious regeneration programme.

We are looking for a talented and successful communications professional to champion Sheffield, engage with our residents and stakeholders and help our story reach a wide audience, ensuring alignment with Council values and best practice.

As a Communications Officer, you will play a key role in enhancing the reputation of the Council and region; showcasing Sheffield as a great place to live, work and invest. You will be responsible for the strategic communications that supports the promotion and successful delivery across Council regeneration programmes and ensure that residents, media outlets, businesses, staff and current or potential investors are effectively communicated with.

You'll be a highly motivated and proactive member of the communications team, have an eye for a news story and comfortable picking up the phone to reporters, pitching stories and handling reputational issues.

We need someone to develop creative ways to share the incredible regeneration journey happening in Sheffield, not just with our residents but also further afield and someone who understands how to communicate with our diverse communities. In Sheffield we stand up for our communities, and there will be a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in all that you do.

It's an exciting time to be joining Sheffield City Council. If you can help us tell our story, get in touch.

We are investing in our workforce and are promoting opportunities to our under-represented groups. We value equality, diversity and inclusion and are focused on increasing the diversity of our workforce, particularly the number of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, Disabled and LGBTQ+ people, so that our teams reflect the communities in the city we serve. We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.

It is a great time to join us and we welcome your application.

Under the Disability Confident Scheme, disabled applicants, who meet the essential criteria of this job, are guaranteed an interview.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.

Equality of pay is extremely important to us. All roles at Sheffield City Council are going through an evaluation process which may result in changes to some pay arrangements from 2026. Find out more on our Sheff news page.
