What matters to us

  • Degree-level qualification in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in delivering large-scale private sector building projects (20m-100m+).
  • Proven ability to embed ESG, ED&I, and social value into project delivery (Sustainability / Diversity).
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen with experience of P&L responsibility (Ownership / Success).
  • In-depth understanding of UK procurement processes, contracts (JCT, NEC), and regulatory frameworks (Reliability).

  • Excellent client engagement and stakeholder management skills, with evidence of building long-term relationships (Partnership / Appreciation).

  • Member of professional body (CIOB RICS) preferred

The Construction Director is accountable for the leadership, performance, and delivery of STRABAG's Public and Private sector building portfolio. This role provides strategic and operational oversight of projects, ensuring health, safety and wellbeing, quality, client satisfaction, programme certainty, and commercial success. The Construction Director must embed STRABAG's People. Planet. Progress. agenda and 9 Core Values across all aspects of leadership, ensuring that ESG, ED&I, and social value commitments are delivered in parallel with technical and financial excellence.
  • Adhere to & ensure all STRABAG Group policies & procedures, systems and governance requirements are followed which stand the scrutiny of internal compliance.
  • Provide visible leadership for health, safety and wellbeing across all projects, embedding a zero-harm culture and ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations and STRABAG standards (Health & Safety Leadership / People. Planet. Progress.).
  • Monitor, challenge, and support project teams to deliver proactive HSEQ management, including behavioural safety, inspections, and close-out of actions (Reliability / Responsibility).
  • Drive quality assurance processes, ensuring project teams actively manage inspections, testing, and defect resolution, and guarantee snag closure within agreed timescales (Reliability / Success).
  • Ensure sustainability, ESG, ED&I, and social value strategies are integrated into project planning and delivery, delivering measurable benefits for clients and communities (Sustainability / Diversity / Social Value).
  • Lead pre-construction governance including Estimating to Delivery handover, Project Kick-Off workshops, and development of robust project strategies covering procurement, programme, risk, and value engineering (Future / Innovation).
  • Work with Project and Commercial Leads to ensure contract obligations, insurance requirements, and authority levels are understood and adhered to across all projects (Reliability / Transparency).
  • Build and maintain strong senior-level relationships with clients, consultants, and stakeholders to secure confidence in STRABAG's capability and ensure long-term partnerships (Partnership / Appreciation).
  • Act promptly on client concerns and ensure project-specific commercial and operational issues are resolved in line with the Business Unit Authority Matrix (Ownership / Reliability).
  • Take full accountability for commercial performance, including cost control, change management, and maximising value through proactive risk and opportunity management (Ownership / Success).
  • Ensure rigorous governance of Monthly Project Reviews (MPRs), providing clear visibility of cost, programme, risk, and performance status (Transparency / Reliability).
  • Oversee and challenge cash management, prelim expenditure, procurement scheduling, and subcontractor performance to safeguard project financial health (Ownership / Reliability).
  • Provide programme leadership, ensuring project teams develop, monitor, and deliver against contract programmes; intervene where performance is at risk and lead recovery strategies (Reliability / Success).
  • Chair and direct regular programme reviews with project leadership teams, ensuring progress monitoring and early warning reporting are consistently applied (Transparency / Reliability).
  • Champion digitalisation in project delivery, driving use of BIM, project controls, and data-driven reporting to improve efficiency, reduce risk, and enhance client reporting (Innovation / Future).
  • Lead, mentor, and develop project leadership teams; ensure succession planning, performance reviews, and training plans are in place across all projects (People Development / Appreciation).
  • Create a culture of accountability and inclusivity, ensuring all staff understand their roles, responsibilities, and opportunities for growth (Diversity / Appreciation).
  • Collaborate and align with Central Services functions to align governance, finance, HR, sustainability, and IT support with operational requirements (Partnership / Transparency).
  • Ensure full compliance with the Build Business Unit Authority Matrix, escalating decisions where required and restricting external commitments to approved levels (Reliability / Ownership).
  • Report with authority to the Business Unit Director on project portfolio performance, covering safety, quality, programme, commercial, ESG, and client outcomes (Transparency / Success).
