This post is offered on a full time (10 PA) basis although less than full time applications will be considered.This post represents an exciting opportunity to join a group of dynamic Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons in providing a wide range of elective orthopaedic services and trauma services to the population of approximately 400,000 in the Wakefield and Kirklees area of Yorkshire. The successful candidate will join 23 other Consultants and 7 Specialty Doctors and 14 Resident Doctors.Duties will be based primarily on our Wakefield (Pinderfields) site although all our medical staff are involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites.The trust is committed that the successful candidate will have equitable working conditions to their colleagues. This job description is equitable with existing Consultant posts. On call frequency, number of theatre lists, and number of SPA sessions are all equal amongst Consultant posts.Main duties of the jobTreatment of hand and wrist conditions. This will include both elective and trauma conditions.Successful candidate will be expected to take on complex wrist fracture referrals from other colleagues and continue on going care.Delivery of care will be in the out-patient, theatre and ward based settingOutpatients will be both elective and fracture clinics

  • Successful candidate will work in a trauma-team over a regular specified 36 hour period. The teams will cover each others on call commitments and back fill trauma lists / clinics when colleagues are on leave.
  • Keep patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) informed about their condition.
  • Involve patients (and/or carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment.
  • Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC) and comply in particular with the GMCs guidance on Good Medical Practice as amended or substituted from time to time.

Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with the skills of the successful candidate and changing requirements of the service.o Examples may include formal teaching responsibilities or departmental leadership rolesFor this post direct clinical care (DCC) (work relating directly to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of illness) includes theatre work, pre and post-operative visiting, emergency work, outpatient pre-assessment activities, and administration directly related to the above, day time and out of hours. All sites are supported by a crash team, have an established escalation policy, and out of hours cover at all sites. There is also a transfer policy in place for deteriorating patients, and when consultants are sick or on leave, care is handed over to the acute or on-call team for any urgent matters arising. Additionally, surgeons are contactable via switchboard during normal working hours for non-urgent matters, and on call teams are available at all times for out of hours advice and management. Furthermore, there is a senior ward round so all patients are reviewed daily and at the elective site have an ACP model for continuous post operative care 24/7. Supporting professional activities (SPA) (that underpin direct clinical care) include participation in training, medical education, continuous professional development, formal teaching, audit, clinical management and clinical governance activities.Person Specification

Experience
Essential
  • Wide range of experience in orthopaedics
  • ATLS provider
  • Fully accredited by college and acceptable to college representative
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of an Orthopaedic Service
  • To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Orthopaedic Service
  • Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)
  • Equivalent two years within orthopaedics dealing with Hand and wrist and Upper limb
  • Logbook evidence of high volume general trauma as well as complex wrist trauma.
  • Upper limb with Hand and wrist Fellowship
  • Able to treat complex wrist fractures surgically
Desirable
  • Extensive Elective Experience in complex hand/wrist upper limb conditions
  • In depth experience in managing all facets upper limb trauma
  • Emphasis on Wrist Trauma, but also Shoulder and Elbow trauma as well as simple/ emergent general orthopaedic trauma Hip fractures, long bone fractures, initial management of fractures/dislocations of other joints.
  • Management & leadership experience
  • Evidence of involvement in teaching and training in Upper limb surgery
  • Interest in developing / improving trauma and elective pathways
  • Evidence of personal contribution to service
  • development in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Demonstrates awareness of the current UK Healthcare system and the need to develop services in line with current policy
  • Computer literate
  • Specific educational interests and evidence of educational ideas or project work.
  • Experience of working as a consultant/locum consultant is desirable.
