RESPONSIBLE TO: Unit Manager



JOB PURPOSE



This role involves assisting in the preparation, presentation, and service of a wide variety of food and beverages, all while adhering to the high standards set by the company. You will be expected to take on various responsibilities across different Catering Units within the company. Your efforts will contribute to maintaining a well-organised and efficiently operating kitchen, ensuring that every meal is not only delicious but also beautifully presented and served in a timely manner. Collaboration with team members is essential to create a harmonious and productive work environment.

RELATIONSHIPS



You will be responsible for reporting to the Manager regarding your tasks and activities. If the Manager is unavailable, you are expected to direct your reports and communicate with the Managing Director and the Directors to ensure that all responsibilities are addressed and any issues are managed appropriately.

CONTRACTS



I will work closely with the company's Manager, Managing Director, and Directors to ensure effective communication and collaboration on various projects and initiatives. This involves participating in regular meetings, providing updates on ongoing tasks, and contributing to strategic discussions to drive the company's success.

SPECIAL/PHYSICAL CONDITIONS



The working hours for this position will be tailored to the specific needs of the residential location, ensuring flexibility and convenience for both staff and residents. This role also necessitates an Enhanced Disclosure, which involves a comprehensive background check to ensure the safety and well-being of those in the home.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



1. Consistently adhere to the standards and guidelines established by the Manager to ensure smooth kitchen operations and high-quality meal preparation.

2. Regularly communicate and collaborate with the Manager and Service Users to gather and address daily requirements, ensuring that their needs and preferences are met efficiently.

3. Maintain a well-organized kitchen environment that promotes efficiency and safety. This includes proper arrangement and storage of ingredients, tools, and equipment.

4. Supervise kitchen staff as necessary, providing guidance, support, and constructive feedback to monitor their performance and ensure adherence to established standards.

5. Ensure that meals provided are culturally acceptable and meet the dietary preferences of all Service Users, making adjustments as necessary to accommodate diverse needs.

6. Uphold the principles of the Equal Opportunity Policy, promoting an inclusive atmosphere within the kitchen and ensuring that all personnel are treated with respect and fairness.

7. Implement practices that promote fuel economy to minimize waste and reduce overall operational costs without compromising the quality of meals prepared.

8. Adhere to portion control guidelines and manage food wastage in accordance with specific directions from the Manager, ensuring that resources are used efficiently.

9. Process and execute orders for kitchen stock and equipment thoughtfully, taking budget restrictions into consideration to maintain financial accountability.

10. Complete and meticulously monitor all documentation associated with kitchen operations, including inventory tracking, order forms, and compliance records.

11. Regularly update and maintain all necessary files within the kitchen to ensure accurate record-keeping and accessibility of information.

12. Vigilantly follow all relevant hygiene and health and safety regulations to maintain a safe and sanitary kitchen environment for staff and Service Users at all times.

13. Attend staff meetings as requested by the Home Manager to discuss operational updates, share feedback, and contribute to team objectives.

14. Participate in relevant training courses to enhance skills and knowledge related to kitchen management, food safety, and culinary practices.

15. Actively contribute to initiatives aimed at improving standards within the kitchen, embracing feedback and implementing best practices wherever possible.

16. Support the Manager in conducting audits and quality assurance reports as required, providing insights on kitchen operations and areas for improvement.

17. Conduct thorough cleaning of all kitchen areas, including floors, pantry, shelves, refrigerators, cooking appliances, and utensils, ensuring that all surfaces are sanitized and well-maintained.

18. Ensure that the kitchen area and floors are left clean and tidy after each use, fostering a professional and welcoming atmosphere for all staff and Service Users.

PERSON SPECIFICATION



Skills and Abilities

Menu Planning:

o Assist in planning and developing menus that cater to diverse dietary needs and preferences of residents, including special diets.

o Ensure menus comply with nutritional guidelines and regulatory requirements.

Food Preparation and Cooking:

o Prepare, cook, and present meals in a timely and efficient manner.

o Ensure food is cooked to the correct temperature and adheres to food safety standards.

o Monitor food quality and taste, making adjustments as necessary.

Food Hygiene and Safety:

o Maintain a clean and hygienic kitchen environment.

o Adhere to strict food hygiene and safety regulations, including HACCP principles.

o Regularly clean and sanitise kitchen equipment and utensils.

Stock Control:

o Assist in managing food stock levels, ensuring adequate supplies.

o Monitor food wastage and implement strategies to minimize it.

Teamwork:

o Work collaboratively with the kitchen team and other staff members.

o Communicate effectively with colleagues and residents.

Resident Interaction:

o Interact with residents in a friendly and respectful manner.

o Respond to resident requests and dietary needs promptly.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

Relevant culinary qualification (e.g., City & Guilds 706/2) or equivalent experience.

Food Hygiene Certificate Level 2.

Proven experience in a commercial kitchen or care home setting.

Knowledge of dietary requirements and special diets.

Strong understanding of food safety and hygiene practices.

Excellent cooking skills, including knowledge of various culinary techniques.

Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Strong organisational and time management skills.

Attention to detail and accuracy.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: 12.21-14.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 25 per week
