Cook Temporary Cover

Job Description

We are looking for someone to provide cover for 8 weeks (possibly longer) in our busy garden centre cafe. You will work four days a week and for two of those days you will be the lead (the cafe manager's day off) so you will be responsible for setting up the kitchen and closing down at the end of the day on those days.

You will work every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Working 8.15am to 4.45pm weekdays and 9am to 3.45pm on Sundays.

Daytime shifts only - no evening work



Responsibilities of the job include:


1. Working under the direction of the cafe manager, you will ensure that food orders are prepared timely, correctly, as budgeted and most importantly tasting delicious. Most days you will be the assistant cook, helping with food prep and serving but on days when the cafe manager is off, you will take on the lead cook role. You must therefore be able to 'step up' when needed.

2. Ensuring the kitchen and stores are kept in order using correct processes and procedures for date marking and food hygiene control.

3. Ensuring food wastage is kept to a minimum.
4. You will ensure all prep work is complete for the next day's service and let the cafe manager know if any ingredients need ordering.
5. You must ensure excellent food hygiene is carried out throughout your shift.
6. All our cooks are trained to work front of house too enabling the team to be multi skilled and responsive in busy periods. You will therefore be given barista training.

7.. You will help the team keep the cafe area and kitchen clean and tidy, which will include pot washing and use of the dishwasher.

8. You will ensure that all H&S legislation and operating policies are followed and recorded. This includes taking regular temperature checks of food, recording fridge and freezer temperatures and correct food labelling and storage.

Desired work experience


Ideally you will have worked in a professional kitchen but if you do a lot of home cooking and prepare menus from scratch then we'd equally like to hear from you. You must be able to work under pressure and have confidence to cover as lead cook. Ideally, you will hold a Food Hygiene certificate Level 2 or higher.

Hours


We expect the successful candidate to work 4 days a week. Subject to rota we anticipate this to be every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. You will get a half hour unpaid break each shift to be taken as and when trading permits.

Hours worked on a Sunday receive an enhanced rate of 15.88 an hour

This is a temporary fixed term cover to cover a staff medical absence. This is planned to be 8 weeks but could be extended.
