Ramsay Hall Community Living Scheme, Worthing, West Sussex.

Salary: 12.86 per hour (12.99 per hour at weekends) plus Pension.

35 hours per week including weekend work and Bank Holidays, worked across a two-week rota .

(Week 1: Monday - Friday - 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

(Week 2: Monday - Wednesday and Saturday/Sunday - 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

We provide accommodation and support services for retired members of the Clergy and beneficiaries of the Church of England Pension scheme. As part of this support there is provision for a daily lunch.

We are seeking a Cook to provide our residents with a daily lunch. You will contribute to food safety and hygiene, and accurate record keeping. A hands-on approach will be required - performing a range of duties including meal preparation, cooking, serving, cleaning and general duties following the meal service.

You will work with colleagues to ensure the kitchen is suitably staffed, which may mean working extra or altered shifts. We offer a generous pension scheme, annual leave and a health benefits package.

BACKGROUND:

The Church of England Pensions Board is a statutory body which is corporate trustee and administrator of four pension schemes. It is also trustee of a number of charitable funds for the benefit of those retired from the stipendiary ministry and clergy widow(er)s. These underpin supplementary income grants, and the provision of retirement housing which includes seven community living housing schemes.

Ramsay Hall is a community living scheme for retired clergy and their spouses. Residents live as independently as possible within self-contained flats. A catering service is available to residents.

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for the preparation of a choice of daily meals at lunchtime for the residents of the scheme and guests including packed lunches where requested. To assist the Head Chef with the efficient and effective management of the catering service and ensuring good practice is implemented in relation to Health & Safety and Food Hygiene regulations and guidelines. The postholder will also be responsible for carrying out general kitchen duties including cleaning and washing up.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Service Provision


1. To assist the Head Chef in developing the catering service within the scheme, including food delivery and service provision within all catering areas.

2. To work closely with other members of the catering team, including in the absence of the Head Chef and taking responsibility for ensuring that the catering service to residents is maintained.

3. To assist the Head Chef in all aspects of food production and presentation to residents, having careful regard to any specific dietary needs of residents. To ensure that the service provision and food preparation meets high quality standards.

4. Assisting in the production of a varied and nutritionally balanced menu providing good value for money, in liaison with the Head Chef and Scheme Manager.

5. To prepare and cook meals on a daily basis as part of the schemes catering team including in the absence of the Head Chef.

6. Assisting the Head Chef to ensure that health and safety, food safety, hygiene and food safety standards with emphasis on Safer Food Better Business for Caterers are met and maintained, and that all records are kept in compliance with the most current legislation.

7. In the absence of the Head Chef, to work closely with other members of the catering team and agency staff, ensuring that procedures are followed correctly and that the required standards of service are achieved.

8. To assist in ensuring that adequate staffing levels are maintained.

9. Undertaking general kitchen duties to include cleaning and washing.

10. To assist support staff in the laying and clearing of tables as and when required and assist in serving meals.

B. Resources, Equipment and Compliance



1. To assist in maintaining the security of the catering areas and helping to maintain the catering areas and all associated equipment, including daily closure of the kitchen after the meal service.

2. To ensure that all kitchen equipment is kept clean and in good working order.

3. To assist with, or as delegated to carry out the ordering of all food and general supplies, ensuring good relationships with local suppliers are created and developed.

4. To be aware of and assist the Head Chef in budget management.

5. To follow best practice and help in the development of systems to ensure continuing good practice in liaison with the regulatory authorities including the Environmental Health Department.

C. Service Delivery



1. The post holder will be expected to work weekdays and weekends on a rota basis and to provide cover for annual leave and sickness.

D. Additional Duties



1. To carry out duties placed on employees by the Health and Safety Act 1974

2. To comply with the Data Protection Act in connection with all aspects of the management of the running of the scheme.

Education:

Qualified to a minimum of NVQ 2 in a catering discipline or equivalent.

Food Hygiene Level 2

Good standard of Education including written English and numeracy

Skills/Experience:

Minimum of 1 year's practical catering experience

Previous experience of the supervision of staff.

A working knowledge and experience of implementing food hygiene and health and safety procedures.

Experience of developing menus, especially for those with special dietary requirements.

Circumstances:

Ability to work shifts according to a rota, to ensure provision of a seven day a week service.

A first aid certificate

Ability to work additional hours as and when required to cover absences and vacancies.

This role involves unsupervised working with vulnerable adults and is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 in respect of spent convictions. Any appointment to this role is therefore subject to satisfactory completion of an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:



Pay: 12.86 Basic Pay and 12.99 Weekend Pay

Pay scales are reviewed annually in April.

Pension Contributions: Non-clergy staff will be admitted to the Defined Contributions Scheme.

Hours of Duty: Normal hours per week are 35 based on a rota system

Annual Leave: 217 hours per year - this represents 6.2 x 35 hours. The leave year runs 1st January to 31st December. This is of public holidays.

Contract: This post is permanent, subject to a six-month probationary period.
