Job Description

This is a fixed term contract until December 2026 after which in some circumstances the role may become a permanent position.



Salary London:

"Base salary: 59,268pa to c.69,727pa depending on skills and experience.


Salary Birmingham:

"Base salary: 54,878pa to c.65,562pa depending on skills and experience.

As a Corporate Lead HSS Investigator at HS2

you will be responsible for acting as the Subject Matter Expert for investigation, causal analysis and carrying out thematic reviews on programme wide incident trends and assurance of supply chain incident investigations to promote programme wide learning and improvement.



About the role:



To act as Lead Investigator in selected serious investigations and to deliver investigations to a professional standards (including recognised best practice and industry standards), identifying immediate and underlying causes of incidents, and prepare reports to make recommendations to correct the immediate and underlying causes identified; Undertake thematic reviews on programme wide incident trends in order to disseminate learning across the programme; Develop close working relationships with delivery and functional teams and provide specialist support, as required, to improve the standard of investigations, reports and to share best practice. This will include assurance of supply chain investigations and sustainment of lessons learned from incident investigations; Develop and maintain a system for the training and licensing of internal investigators, including the preparation of internal training materials for accident investigation; Manage responses to comments and queries concerning investigation reports, taking steps to have information appropriately evaluated; Establish constructive working relationships with external organisations, including industry groups, which generate a respect within those organisations for investigations led by HS2; Promote a culture of learning from incidents (including significant external events) and apply any learnings to the design, build and operation of the railway for HS2 staff and through our Supply Chain. Lead on implementation and delivery of the Safety Validation of Change process. Undertake HSS Governance Reviews periodically as required. Actively promote and embed Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work, and support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI

About You:



Skills


The ability to manage or support multiple work streams simultaneously Delivering a high standard of work within demanding timescales Excellent verbal, written, presentation and training skills Logical thinker, with good analytical skills and IT system operating skills The ability to brief and report to senior levels of HS2, and to interact at all levels The ability to gain the respect and trust of a wide range of stakeholders The ability to receive and understand complex investigation information. An enquiring mind and good analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to decide what information is important Methodical approach to gathering evidence with an eye for detail and the ability to work unsupervised to meet tight deadlines

Knowledge


Detailed knowledge of investigation techniques and experience in leading investigations in the public/private sector, including experience in conducting investigative interviews, evidence gathering, analysis and presentation Knowledge of incident investigation principles and processes Knowledge of incident investigation, standards and guidelines Good knowledge of construction operations, engineering, safety management and rail industry standards. Good knowledge of health and safety legislation Methodical approach to gathering evidence with an eye for detail and the ability to work unsupervised to meet tight deadlines

Experience


Managing a virtual team of investigators Operating within a regulatory environment Good knowledge of construction operations, engineering, safety management and rail industry standards. Good knowledge of health and safety legislation Experience of incident investigation in the construction sector or a similar scale of project. Experience of collaborating effectively with regulators and supply chain Experience in engaging with stakeholders at high level and has ability and personal resilience to cope well in challenging situations
