The Dental Ceramist is responsible for designing, fabricating, and finishing high-quality dental restorations with a strong focus on aesthetics, function, and precision. This role requires advanced knowledge of ceramic materials, colour theory, and dental anatomy to produce restorations that meet clinical requirements and patient expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Fabricate and layer ceramic restorations including crowns, bridges, veneers, inlays/onlays, and implant-supported prosthetics
Perform porcelain build-ups, contouring, glazing, staining, and finishing to achieve optimal aesthetics and function
Accurately match tooth shade, translucency, texture, and morphology using shade guides and photos
Work with materials such as zirconia, lithium disilicate, feldspathic porcelain, and metal-ceramics
Collaborate closely with dentists, lab technicians, and CAD/CAM teams to ensure case accuracy
Review prescriptions, impressions, digital scans, and photos for completeness and accuracy
Make adjustments and refinements based on clinical feedback or try-in results
Maintain consistent quality standards and turnaround times
Follow laboratory safety protocols and infection control standards
Maintain and care for ceramic furnaces, tools, and workstations
Stay current with new materials, techniques, and industry advancements
Required Qualifications
GDC registered
Formal training or certification in Dental Technology or Dental Ceramics
Proven experience as a Dental Ceramist (typically 2+ years, depending on seniority)
Strong understanding of dental anatomy, occlusion, and aesthetics
Proficiency in ceramic layering and finishing techniques
Excellent colour vision and attention to detail
Ability to interpret dental prescriptions and digital case files
Manual dexterity and artistic skill
Strong time management and organisational skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with digital dentistry workflows (CAD/CAM, Exocad, 3Shape, etc.)
Experience with implant restorations and full-arch cases
Experience in high-end cosmetic or boutique dental laboratories
Certification or advanced training in ceramics or aesthetic dentistry
Work Environment
Dental laboratory setting
Requires prolonged periods of sitting and fine hand movements
Use of microscopes, ceramic furnaces, rotary instruments, and digital tools
