Deputy Finance Manager (Medical Sciences Divisional Office)



Full time, permanent vacancy (37.5 hours per week)

This role also offers the opportunity for hybrid working. Our office location is Medical Sciences Divisional Office, Level 3, John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, OX3 9DU.


About the Role:


The Deputy Finance Manager will support the Finance Manager in delivering efficient financial services to the Divisional Office and sub-units. You will take a lead in building and maintaining a network of colleagues with financial responsibilities to support collaboration and best practice sharing.

You will deputise for the Finance Manager, oversee core financial services such as reporting, journal processing, purchase-to-pay, accounts receivable, expense claims, and external recharges. Additionally, you will supervise a Finance Assistant, maintaining high standards and efficiency in transactions.

Key Responsibilities Include:


Support the Finance Manager in preparing budgets, forecasts, management accounts, and financial plans; monitor budget performance and produce timely, accurate reports for stakeholders.

Ensure robust financial controls and procedures are in place and compliant with university regulations; provide expert advice, training, and support to staff on financial policies and practices.

Manage day-to-day financial processes including purchase-to-pay, accounts receivable, expense claims, and interdepartmental journals; supervise a Finance Assistant to maintain high standards.

Build and maintain a collaborative network of finance contacts across departments; promote cost control and financial awareness through training, guidance, and regular communication.

Act as deputy to the Finance Manager, attending meetings and contributing to strategic planning; make informed decisions in their absence and support complex financial problem-solving.

Degree-level education with strong accounting knowledge and progress toward a CCAB qualification.

Proven experience in budgeting, forecasting, and analysing complex financial data sets.

Advanced Excel skills and deep understanding of financial systems and reporting tools.

Able to explain complex financial info clearly to non-specialists and influence decision-making.

Builds effective relationships, motivates teams, and thrives under pressure with minimal supervision
