As the Deputy House Manager / Deputy Clinical Lead, you will support the House Manager in leading and managing a dedicated team of nurses and care staff, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to children and young people. You will play a vital role in coordinating care and supporting the management of the House, serving as a key contact for families and the multidisciplinary team. Collaborating with the House Manager and Placement Managers, you will help ensure that care is effectively planned, resourced, and delivered safely at all times. You will support the house manager to ensure that the care on house or houses enables the children to access their education and/or rehabilitation sessions, clinics, and leisure activities in their timetable.
You will work as part of a leadership team comprising of a house manager, deputy house manager / deputy clinical lead and a clinical lead (per house) responsible for one or two houses within a rotational model. You will individually (not as a team) rotate at a house level on a twelve-monthly basis. Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Skills and Responsibilities Participate in the clinical assessment of children referred to The Childrens Trust and assist in contributing to the Referral Screening Report. Support the assessments, care planning, and evaluation of childrens care needs in collaboration with families.
Work with the Site Manager to ensure the appropriate monitoring of children out of hours. Facilitate an environment that allows children to express themselves and make choices about their care. Assist in setting social goals for children, ensuring a variety of activities are available. Ensure the quality of care aligns with clinical audits and places children and families at the centre of care planning.
Collaborate with the Placement Manager on effective discharge planning processes. Support the safe custody and administration of medication, reporting discrepancies. Contribute to the principles of clinical governance within the house / houses Engage in evidence-based practice and research to inform care. Management of self and others Assist in leading a team in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for children and young people.
Help ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix to meet the needs of children. Monitor team performance and individual development in alignment with SMART objectives. Participate in the performance management process for staff, identifying areas for improvement and addressing them in line with the Childrens Trust Performance Management Policy. Assist in recruitment, selection, and retention of staff.
Manage incidents and ensure learning outcomes are shared with the team. Identifies the need for, and effectively manages the process of change, in line with local and Trust wide objectives. Ability to positively and effectively manage the process of change. Participates in the annual budget setting process and manages financial resources within the allocated budget.
Manages staff attendance and sickness absence as per The Childrens Trust Wellbeing and Attendance policy, undertakes return to work interviews and takes initial management action if trigger points are met. Effective and efficient use of the bank system. Checks and countersigns time sheets on the computerised rota system. Reviews staffing establishment and skill mix to ensure the needs of the children and unit are safely met.
Ensures unit meetings and team days occur on a regular basis. Participates in the site managers on call rota. Communication Communicates effectively with children/young people (applying the principles of consistent communication). Facilitates effective communication with families and members of the multi-professional team.
Recognises barriers to effective communication and be able to reduce these as appropriate. Communicates regularly and effectively with the senior nursing team. Maintains clear and concise documents and care records in accordance with The Childrens Trust Policy and in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council guidelines. Ensures confidentially is maintained.
Attends or chairs regular meetings with the multi-professional team to discuss individual children/young people and service in general, as required. Is able to develop and promote relationships with both internal and external stake holders. Networks externally with other professionals, reflecting the TCT core values. Governance Demonstrates a good understanding and working knowledge of regulatory compliance e.g.
CQC, Ofsted Care and Ofsted Education frameworks, children's home regulations and Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE). Responsible for clinical governance within the house environment (own area) Attends clinical governance meetings and participates in the clinical governance process. Participates in the audit process. Is involved in the development of polices and standard operating procedures including writing and critical reading.
Identifies, prioritises, and manages staff and resources effectively to ensure that the quality of care is safe, maintained, and improved. Ensures that evidence based good practiced is implemented and that good practices is disseminated with other. Working in collaboration with the Named Nurse for Safeguarding and Learning and Development Lead ensuring that staff have the knowledge, skills, and competence to recognise children and young people who may be at risk or subject to child protection and safeguarding issues, taking appropriate action to escalate accordingly. Contribute to Safeguarding supervision individually and collectively as required.
Ensures health and safety is maintained in the clinical area reporting any incidents/risks using the IRAR system and act upon incidents and risks when these are identified. Participates in the investigation process and ensures all reported incidents are followed up. Implements actions identified and ensures that these are embedded into practice. With the Head of Nursing, Care and Matron for Children and Young people be accountable for the decisions to delegate patient care to nurses/children support assistants with the right level of knowledge, scope of competence, skills and experience while providing them with the necessary, support, leadership, and supervision.
Ensures that quality is maintained and works with the Matron for Children and Young People to look for areas of service development. In co-operation with Specialist Leads and Consultants, ensure that there is active management of the patient journey and their length of stay in designated areas of responsibility. Professionalism Work collaboratively with the House Manager and the leadership team, including the House Clinical Lead, to provide visible leadership. Support the House Manager in the line management of registered nurses and care staff, focusing on staff development and career progression.
Act as a role model, sharing skills and knowledge with team members. Collaborate with the House Clinical Lead to identify training needs for yourself and other team members, including Childrens Support Assistants and Student Nurses. Assist in the induction process for new staff in the House. Provide clinical supervision and support to registered nurses and care staff, in partnership with the House Clinical Lead.
Engage with educational, therapy, and medical teams to ensure a holistic experience for children in the House. Takes action and raises concerns. Adhere to the policies and procedures of The Childrens Trust. Maintain professional boundaries and professionalism at all times.
