Purpose and Summary of Job



Working with children and young people ranging between 6 and 18 years of age to safeguard and always promote their safety and welfare. To support the children and young people to feel a sense of belonging and influence within their home, providing individualised day to day care and support.

Provide and encourage children and young people with opportunities to engage in hobbies and experiences to attain positive outcomes, boost confidence and improve resilience while increasing their levels of independence and self-regulation by becoming a key attachment figure in their lives.

Main Duties & Responsibilities



To support the organisation in the management and development of high-quality care resources for children and young people within Heron Care Group homes; undertaking delegated supervisory management responsibilities.

To provide management to all staff to ensure the development of best practice in residential care and optimal outcomes for children and young people.

To always safeguard and promote the safety and welfare of each child or young person; this is to be achieved primarily by knowing and following Heron Care Group policies and procedures including the instructions of more senior staff and (if no such policy, procedure or instruction exists) to act in the best interest of the child or young person.

Where emergency situations arise, to always have in your practice the need to protect children and young people from suffering significant harm (whether physical, psychological, emotional, financial etc.). Where this is consistent with your duties, to take reasonable steps to protect your own health and safety and that of others.

When working with children and young people, to demonstrate a variety of approaches and techniques that seek to minimise risk and promote their personal development; to key work children and young people in a supportive and structured manner that teaches them skills in a manner that is adapted to their individual needs and goals.

To create a caring, stimulating and safe education & care environment for all children, young people, staff and visitors.

Safeguard and promote the reputation of the Heron Care Group.

To actively engage and consult with the children and young people within the home and where required advocate on their behalf.

Deputy Manager responsibilities include:



Acting as a role model, leading by example and promoting positive behaviour.

Supporting the daily needs of the child or young person.

Supporting the children or young people links with their families and local community, promoting continued contact.

Providing emotional support.

To promote Children's Rights and safeguard children and young people's welfare.

To have a good working understanding of the Children's Homes Regulations 2015

To implement Health and Safety legislation and policy.

To promote Equal Opportunities for all, embracing diversity and challenging discrimination.

Respect the cultural, religious and personal practices and needs of children and young people.

To always retain confidentiality.

Be accountable for your own standard of practice.

Creating a safe and happy environment in which to live and learn.

To immediately alert the Responsible Individual of any safeguarding concerns.

To ensure that filing and administrative systems are completed to a high standard.

To contribute to the implementation and development of quality assurance systems and to aid continuous improvement.

To work unsupervised when required and to follow the organisation's 'Lone Working' policy and procedures, referring matters of importance through the 'on-call' system.

To mediate and be the link between more senior and more junior staff. To report issues of importance to your line manager in a timely and appropriate way.

To undertake any other duties as requested by your line manager.

To undertake on call responsibilities in line with your contract of employment.

Helping children and young people to access education, health and leisure services.

Providing children and young people with the guidance they need to boost their independence skills.

Contributing to the placement planning and recording systems for the children or young person.

Collating information required for the child or young person progress reports or reviews.

Planning, undertaking and recording key worker sessions.

Supporting the child or young person to progress towards their EHCP outcomes.

Making sure the child or young person's Care Plan is kept up to date and relevant to their interests and needs.

Take ownership and act in the best interest of the child or young person health needs, which may require you to attend appointments with health professionals. To complete and be accountable for the actions following these appointments.

Making sure the child or young person has adequate clothing and ensure the child or young person is clean and presentable along with supporting the young person with any self-care needs they may have.

Knowing the child or young person, which may include, although not limited to, their file, background and family details, their interests and hobbies, encouraging them to take part, join clubs etc.

Supporting the child or young person to express their views at various meetings such as house meetings.

Supporting and encouraging the child or young person to actively feedback about the care they receive.

Proactively engage with children and young people ensuring that their voice is heard and to ensure that their personal interests and views are at the centre of decision making.

Managerial and Shift Leading



As a Deputy Manager you will ensure that all duties are carried out to a high standard

Allocate work to teams and individuals, agreeing objectives and work plans, assessing the performance of teams and individuals and giving appropriate feedback to individuals and management

Maintain effective staff discipline, always operating within Heron Care Group policies and procedures.

As required undertake agreed specific staff supervisory responsibilities, such as staff supervision and induction of less experienced staff, maintaining all required records and complying with the Supervision policy.

Support the deployment of staff and other resources effectively to ensure that children and young people are supported in the best possible way.

Role Model to Children, Young People & Other Staff



To always set a good example to children and young people in terms of:

Appropriateness of dress and other aspects of personal presentation.

Maintaining good personal hygiene.

Using appropriate language and humour.

Demonstrating good manners.

Demonstrating equality, diversity and of respect for all.

Working Pattern & Preparation



To undertake a working pattern in accordance with the rota provided; Rota Plans are subject to change and may be changed with 1 weeks' notice due to the needs of the business.

To keep up to date with the development of each child or young person in your care by reading (and re-reading from time to time) their Care plan, EHCP, Behaviour support plan and other relevant records and reports.

Willingly and be prompt to undertake any household tasks allocated to you and any intimate care tasks reasonably required for children or young people.

Willingly to undertake offsite supervision or duties, such as accompanying a child or young person when attending a hospital, dental, opticians or other external appointments or activities or when travelling for a home visit, where reasonably requested to do so; This may also include supporting children or young people to go away for short breaks and holidays.

Young Person/Student Medication and Treatment



To train and administer medication and treatment in accordance with the safe administration of medication policy, following training and guidance from suitably qualified members.

Physical Intervention



To do all you reasonably can to obtain and maintain sufficiently good physical health to be able to undertake Physical intervention training and annual re-accreditation.

To obtain and always maintain accreditation in the Physical Intervention system, including compliance timelines and refresher programs

To understand and be clear on all policies, procedures and your own responsibilities in regard to physical intervention.

Personal Training & Professional Development



To be a reflective practitioner, who:

Seeks out advice and supervision whenever necessary.

Attends and contributes to supervision with good analysis and suggested solutions, as well as an agenda of items to discuss.

Ensures annual compliance with all allocated regulatory training.

Always makes high quality and well-presented written and spoken reports and records.

Other Training



To take responsibility to attend training when reasonably required to do so to promote the effective delivery of the role of Deputy Manager. This includes all mandatory training as well as other relevant specialised training to meet the individual needs of the children or young people.

Support for Management



To proactively assist and support the Registered Manager in the development and maintenance amongst staff and children of a positive attitude and approach towards each person and towards Heron Care Group policies and procedures, including the development and maintenance of good teamwork (especially when difficulties or conflicts arise);

Actively to contribute to the development and analysis of strategies, routines and solutions to children, young people or staff issues, working at all times in liaison with the Registered Manager.

To actively assist Heron Care Group Management to:

Prepare for any formal inspection by an outside agency.

Promote Heron Care Group

Driving Home Vehicles



If permitted to drive the vehicles, always to do so in an appropriate, safe and responsible manner in line with policies and procedures that are in place.

Policies, Procedures & Standards



To work in line with Heron Care Group policies and procedure and to be able to summarise relevant information when asked.

To understand current relevant legislation.

To identify and follow all policies and procedures including the Codes of Practice for social care.

To keep accurate daily records, following the organisation's procedures and in line with the Data Protection Act 1998 and confidentiality policy.

Meetings



To support the lead of all required house and staff meetings, and to take minutes and promptly pass them to the Registered Manager if asked to do so.

To contact, meet or liaise with external professionals, parents or visitors in accordance with your role as Deputy Manager.

Pay: 17.00 per hour

Expected hours: 37.5 per week
