To support the Home Manager and Night Manager in ensuring high-quality, person-centred care is delivered throughout the night.
The Deputy Night Manager is the senior responsible person on duty, leading and supervising the night team to ensure residents' safety, dignity, comfort, and wellbeing in the absence of the Night Manager
The post holder will manage the smooth running of the home overnight, handle any emergencies, maintain documentation, and ensure compliance with CQC and Oldham Total Care standards.
General Responsibilities:
Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or Assistant Practitioner with significant experience of working in the care home sector.
To comply with Oldham Total Care policies, CQC essential standards and other legislation directly affecting the location and its customers.
Leadership & Management
Lead, supervise, and support night staff to deliver compassionate and effective care.
Allocate duties and ensure adequate staffing levels throughout the night.
Provide guidance, motivation, and performance feedback to the team.
Act as the senior point of contact during the night, making decisions in the absence of the Night Manager.
Resident Care
Oversee and support the nursing and residential teams in delivering care to residents with complex needs.
Ensure care plans are followed and updated where required.
Provide clinical support, including assessment and intervention, in the absence of senior nursing staff.
Respond promptly and appropriately to medical emergencies, liaising with on-call managers or emergency services when required.
Uphold residents' dignity, independence, and rights at all times.
Safety & Compliance
Take overall responsibility for the security of the building overnight.
Carry out regular night-time checks on the home environment, security, and equipment.
Ensure infection control, safeguarding, health & safety, and fire safety procedures are maintained.
Administer, oversee, and record medications in line with NMC and organisational standards.
Ensure compliance with CQC Fundamental Standards and organisational policies.
Communication & Reporting
Maintain accurate night reports, incident records, and resident notes.
Report concerns regarding residents, staff performance, or safety issues to the Registered Manager or Day Deputy Manager.
Support effective communication between day and night teams.
Provide supervision and mentorship to care and nursing staff during the night shift.
Monthly attendance during the day at either OTC governance or management meetings.
Key Skills and Qualifications
Qualifications & Registration
Registered Nurse (NMC-registered, RGN/RMN) or Assistant Practitioner with significant experience of working in the care home sector.
Willingness to undertake a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care or equivalent
Experience & Skills
Proven experience in senior nursing or clinical leadership roles within care or nursing homes.
Strong clinical leadership and decision-making skills.
Ability to manage and prioritise multiple demands in a busy environment.
Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Compassionate, approachable, and resident-centred.
Calm under pressure, with the ability to lead in emergencies.
Promote safeguarding responsibilities and staff compliance.
IT literate (care planning systems, reporting tools).
Work as part of the clinical/care teams when on shift.
