About the Business Unit
Our busy project environment manages an extensive portfolio of civils projects, including line-side rail civil works, bridges and structures renewals, large structural installations such as new bridges, Access for All (AFA) schemes, and general civils works. Projects include bridge upgrades, station refurbishments, footbridges, line-side civils, and other structural enhancements.
Role Overview
This role focuses on supporting the delivery of the CP7 Wales Civils Framework, a design & build contract involving the renewal and refurbishment of railway assets (underbridges, overbridges, footbridges, tunnels, retaining walls, scour defences) throughout Wales. The Design Coordinator will assist Engineering Managers in collating base information, coordinating design activities with our design partners, and ensuring timely production of high-quality, buildable designs aligned with project specifications and programme.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee and monitor design progress against schedule and budget, implementing corrective actions as needed.
Review, negotiate, and recommend approval/disapproval of design change orders.
Liaise formally with design teams, business functions (Business Development, Estimating, Planning, Operations, Commercial), and stakeholders, report on design progress.
Manage the administration of design subcontractors, including processing invoices and monitoring incentive/disincentive programs.
Conduct constructive reviews of IDC/IDR conforming designs to contract requirements and proposals.
Coordinate and control design submittals for approval, facilitating resolution of design issues with the client.
Identify scope changes and prepare change orders, early warnings, and instructions.
Assess risks and opportunities in design-construction interfaces and manage document control (current versions, storage, accessibility).
Support inspections, assess installation standards, and prepare reports for project close-out.
Contribute to constructability reviews, value engineering, and contractor preferences throughout the project lifecycle.
Promote continuous improvement and best practices within design coordination.
Support project handback and close-out procedures.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Proven experience as a Design Coordinator within a rail or civil engineering environment.
Strong understanding of design delivery processes and managing design consultants.
Experience in preparing and managing consultant briefs and contractual arrangements.
Knowledge of CDM regulations and the roles of Designer and Principal Contractor.
CITB TWC (Temporary Works Coordinator) qualification is beneficial.
Excellent communication, coordination, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Academic & Professional Qualifications
Relevant experience in rail civil engineering design coordination.
Desirable: CITB TWC qualification, or equivalent.
