We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Research & Development business unit based in Slough on a permanent (hybrid working) basis.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will form an integral part of the New Product Development business unit, a team of highly creative and innovative engineering experts. You will be responsible for our Dry Gas Seal development projects and working collaboratively with the wider team to develop concepts into industry leading commercial products.

You will perform a variety of mechanical engineering design tasks related to Dry Gas Seal products that meet the needs of the business and departmental objectives of the New Product Development team. You will need to use your sound engineering judgment, to resolve design issues whilst providing guidance and supporting business growth.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Effective use of CAD systems 2D&3D (Siemens Solid Edge preferred) in the creation and checking of General Arrangement and detail manufacturing drawings
  • Applying a sound understanding of mechanical engineering principles i.e., associated tolerancing, surface finish requirements and manufacturing techniques.
  • Design with consideration to the aesthetics, materials, and functionality of components.
  • Utilise parametric modelling to support in design automation of existing and new product lines.
  • Undertake model making (ANSYS or similar) evaluating stress and deformation.
  • Undertake a level of complex engineering calculations (e.g., basic stress analysis)
  • Manage small design related projects
  • The design of suitable test rigs and supporting hardware that facilitates product development
  • Support the transition of a product from product development into production

The Individual
  • Mechanical engineering degree (ideally MSc/MEng or alternatively BSc/BEng) with a good understanding of engineering concepts.
  • Some post-graduate work experience (2-3 years), in a mechanical product development/ product design role would be preferred
  • Full knowledge of 3D modelling & 2D drawing with a CAD software such as Solid Edge or SolidWorks
  • Knowledge of Drafting and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing
  • Some knowledge of FEA (Ansys or Abaqus) would be beneficial
  • Experience working with the following products, or similar, will be beneficial: actuators, valves, pumps, compressors, general rotating equipment (anything involving fluid or pressure).
  • Attention to detail and the ability to build good relationships.
  • A resource-oriented person with an innovative mind and focused on deadlines and targets.
  • Experience of project management, the ability to plan in detail his/ her tasks to fit within the overall product development timelines
  • The candidate must be proactive and independent to allow the wider team to successfully delegate design tasks
