Job Description

Design Engineer responsible for delivering high-quality, cost-effective designs that meet customer requirements and manufacturing capabilities.

This role focuses on ownership of product designs, supporting project delivery through detailed engineering, managing technical documentation such as Bills of Materials (BOMs) and Production Orders, and ensuring products are optimised for cost, manufacturability, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities



Product and Project Delivery



The detailed design and development of hydraulic, mechanical, control, and instrumentation products and solutions. Generate complete, accurate 3D models, engineering drawings, BOMs, and production documentation to company standards. Manage technical aspects of assigned projects, ensuring that design work supports project schedules, specifications, and budgets. Maintain technical ownership of assigned designs through the project lifecycle, supporting production and customer delivery.

Cost-Conscious and Production-Focused Design



Design with cost control, manufacturability, and assembly efficiency as core priorities. Prepare and maintain Production Orders, ensuring that all required materials, specifications, and assembly details are accurately captured. Engage with suppliers and manufacturing teams to confirm design feasibility, material selections, and production methods. Identify opportunities for cost reductions, standardisation, and design improvements.

Cross-Functional Collaboration



Work closely with the Commercial Manager to clarify project scopes and support technical aspects of proposals and customer queries. Collaborate with Manufacturing and Supply Chain teams to resolve technical challenges during production and supply. Support quality control activities, including design validations, inspections, and non-conformance investigations as needed.

Compliance and Quality



Ensure that all designs conform to relevant standards (e.g., ISO 9001, PED, UKCA/CE marking, ATEX where applicable) and internal quality procedures. Participate in design reviews, technical risk assessments, and FMEA processes.

Skills and Experience Required



Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field. 5+ years' experience in an engineering design environment, preferably within hydraulics, controls, or specialist equipment sectors. Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and technical document generation (BOMs, Production Orders, Specifications). Good understanding of hydraulic and mechanical system design principles. Proven ability to design with cost, manufacturability, and production efficiency in mind. Knowledge of ISO 9001 and industry compliance requirements. Effective organisational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Practical problem-solving skills and a commercially aware mindset

Desirable Attributes



Experience working within an SME manufacturing environment. Exposure to prototype development, testing, and product validation. Experience working with MRP/ERP systems to manage BOMs and production workflows. Awareness of lean manufacturing principles and design-for-assembly techniques.

Performance Measures



Accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of design outputs (drawings, BOMs, Production Orders). Cost effectiveness and manufacturability of designs. Compliance of designs with project specifications, standards, and regulations. Contribution to project delivery milestones and schedules. Successful support of manufacturing and supply chain activities during production ramp-up.

Pay: 30,000.00-50,000.00 per year
