Job Description

: Director of Studies



The English Experience is an English language school offering short courses for young learners aged 11-18. We pride ourselves on creating a supportive and engaging environment where students can build confidence in English through study and immersive cultural experiences. We are seeking a part-time Director of Studies to manage our Integration Projects and lead our academic team. The English Experience is a British Council Centre of Excellence.

Part time (25 hours per week), Monday-Friday 8:30am - 2:00pm (including a 30-minute unpaid break)*
Salary: 31,250 annually (pro rata).*
Successful candidate to start mid-January.*

The hours and salary are negotiable for the right candidate.

Duties



Management of Teaching Staff



Responsible for teacher recruitment in line with student enrolments, in accordance with company policy (including child safeguarding and welfare). Accountable for teacher induction and teacher training. Ensures regular lesson observations and constructive feedback take place, designs CPD sessions and provides information and advice on external training for staff. Arranges teaching cover when teachers are absent; ensuring that teachers have instructions available on what is to be taught in their absence using the Scheme of Work and Weekly Timetable. Briefs the cover teacher accurately to ensure students have continuity of class content. Ensures teachers are up to date with administrative procedures, including registers, progress reports and certificates. Ensures teachers produce weekly Schemes of Work and that these are filed to avoid repetition of work.

HR Administration



Works with the Accommodation Officer to ensure a DBS check is carried out for each member of the teaching staff prior to a new teacher starting employment with the school. Ensures references are taken up and received prior to a new teacher starting employment with the school. Maintains records of sickness and holidays, authorises holiday dates with teaching staff; holidays to be taken at such times to be convenient Carries out appraisals for reviewing the performance of all academic staff in accordance with company policy, with appropriate target setting and monitoring of progress. Carries out the disciplinary of staff, when required, in line with the company procedures as outlined in the Staff Handbook.

Integration Project Coordination



Contacts state, boarding, and private schools with the aim of recruiting new schools to participate in the Integration Project. Visits schools when required e.g. to welcome new groups, provide support, and hand out certificates on the final day. Maintains good relationships with schools throughout the year Ensures all certificates are prepared and delivered to the school.

Academic Administration



Prepares class registers, schedules, course reports and student certificates. Maintains class averages at optimal levels. Responsible for the allocation of teachers to classes/courses. Class timetabling: carries out intake procedures, student placement and testing. Co-ordinates Syllabus design. Resources development: ordering materials which are appropriate to the needs of teachers and students on Study Holiday and Short courses. Social media: regularly publishes photos and notices to the school Facebook and Instagram pages.

Student Welfare & Academic Support



Co-ordinates examination entries and certificates. Liaises with Accommodation Coordinator and other administrative staff on students' pastoral care, where necessary. Carries out classroom teaching when required, according to number of enrolments at the school. Acts as a Designated Welfare Person, liaising with the DSL on safeguarding issues and adhering to the responsibilities as set out in the English Experience Safeguarding Policy (Involved in policy writing, training and ensuring that the Safeguarding team are upholding all areas of the Safeguarding Policy regarding Teachers. Present in the welcome talk for students and Group Leaders.)

Operations



Liaises with Group Leaders and Agents on visits to the school. Meets with ad hoc walk-in enquiries (mostly teachers looking for employment opportunities) Ensures that classrooms are set up correctly for use each morning and that windows and doors are secure at night. Holds keys to the building. Opens/locks up when required. Any other duties as required by the Director of the English Experience.

Qualifications and experience



TEFLQ Diploma (e.g. DELTA, PGCE, MA/MSc in ELT/TESOL etc. Please refer to Accreditation UK if unsure)*. (E)
2+ years' experience teaching young learners (aged 11-18). (E) Experience in ELT Management. (E) Minimum CEFR C1 level English proficiency.(E) Experience building relationships with external partners (E) The right to work in the UK (E) Experience with and/or knowledge of British Council inspections. (D) Experience developing ELT resources for young learners (aged 11-18). (D) Experience working in and/or knowledge of UK secondary schools. (D)

Skills, knowledge, and understanding



Excellent written and oral communication skills (E) Excellent time management skills (E) High level of competency in IT, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook (E) Driving licence and access to own vehicle. (D) Knowledge of social media marketing (D)
