About Us
Sonic Stone is a leading UK supplier and fabricator of natural and sintered stone. We work directly with top quarries and premium brands, delivering projects from bespoke residential pieces to complex commercial fit-outs. With a busy factory in Byfleet and a growing design team, we're now hiring a Draughtsman / CAD Technician with impeccable attention to detail, to turn concepts and site templates into production-ready files.
The Opportunity
You'll be responsible for producing accurate technical drawings for workshop fabrication and digital CNC files for factory production, ensuring every detail meets both technical and aesthetic standards.
The role also involves creating visuals and renders for client sign-off, providing clear, realistic representations of proposed designs before production begins.
You'll collaborate closely with templators and the production team, interpreting both physical templates and handmade survey drawings to ensure each piece fits perfectly on site. Strong communication is essential, as you'll liaise with installers, project managers, and designers to clarify fabrication details, tolerances, and fixing methods.
Ideal candidates have previous experience in stone or joinery manufacturing, understand how parts are actually made and installed, and can translate that practical knowledge into precise CAD drawings and CNC-ready files. They are methodical, design-aware, and technically precise, experienced in preparing DXF/DWG files, cutting lists, and workshop packs for both CNC and manual fabrication. Candidates should be confident reviewing architectural drawings, extracting key details, and maintaining Sonic Stone's reputation for accuracy and craftsmanship.
Key Responsibilities
Produce accurate fabrication drawings (plans, sections, details) for worktops, claddings, vanities, stair parts, furniture components, and other bespoke stone or joinery pieces, for both workshop fabrication and digital CNC production.
Convert physical/site templates and designer drawings into CNC-ready DXF files with correct layers, radii, tool allowances, datum references, and machining features such as edge profiles, sink/hob cut-outs, drainer grooves, fall to waste, fluting, slots, rebates, pockets, and mechanical fixings.
Prepare cut lists, nesting layouts, and workshop packs for production and installation teams, optimising slab utilisation, material efficiency, and assembly clarity.
Apply tolerances and offsets (kerf/tool diameter, minimum inside radii, over-cut relief, polishing allowances) to ensure accuracy and manufacturability.
Develop vein/book-match setting-out plans where required.
Create visual drawings, 2D/3D client mock-ups, isometric views, and renders for client sign-off, clearly representing design intent, materials, finishes, and aiding workshop understanding.
Coordinate with designers, architects, clients, and internal teams (Sales, Estimating, Production, Installation) to propose practical solutions, clarify specifications, resolve clashes, and manage revisions.
Interpret handmade survey drawings and site measurements (laser, Proliner, or manual) to accurately update CAD files.
Conduct occasional site surveys and measurements and translate them into accurate CAD drawings, ensuring all on-site conditions are reflected in fabrication files.
Design and document support elements such as metal frames, brackets, and fixing systems where required.
Review and update drawings through all project stages, maintaining revision control, drawing standards, and file hygiene across projects.
Ensure all outputs comply with Sonic Stone's technical standards, tolerances, and quality requirements.
Maintain an organised digital workflow using AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Google Workspace for documentation, communication, and project management.
Requirements / Skills
Industry experience: Minimum of 2+ years as a CAD Technician or Draughtsman in stone fabrication or bespoke joinery, including worktops, claddings, furniture, stairs, kitchens, bathrooms, or commercial fit-outs.
CAD & 3D proficiency: Strong experience with AutoCAD 2D and 3D modelling software (e.g., SketchUp, 3ds Max, or similar) is essential for creating technical drawings, models, and renders for client sign-off. AutoCAD 3D and other CAD/3D software (e.g., Fusion 360) are considered additional advantages.
DXF production for CNC: Comfortable preparing clean, layered, machinable files suitable for factory CNC toolpathing with minimal rework.
CNC machining knowledge: Solid understanding of toolpaths, bit diameters, lead-ins, minimum radii, countersinks, and rebates, applying tolerances and offsets accurately.
Drawing interpretation: Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings (plans, elevations, sections, details) and coordinate with site measurements and conditions.
Attention to detail: Highly organised, detail-driven, with excellent time management, revision control, and file hygiene.
Measurement and templating skills: Comfortable conducting site surveys and template measurements (laser, Proliner, or manual) and converting them into accurate CAD drawings.
Software skills: Proficient in MS Office / Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive), with ability to quickly learn and adopt new software.
Communication and problem-solving: Strong communication skills; able to query ambiguous information, propose practical and buildable solutions, and liaise with clients for design revisions and sign-off.
Nice to Have / Beneficial
Exposure to CAM or stone/joinery CNC software (e.g., EasySTONE (preferred), AlphaCAM, Breton, Biesse, HOMAG).
Experience producing rendered visuals (Enscape, V-Ray, Twinmotion) for client approvals.
Knowledge of materials and finishes (marble, quartzite, onyx, porcelain/sintered stone, solid timber, veneers, metals).
Experience with slab yield optimisation and factory workflows.
CSCS card and UK site experience.
