E Commerce Manager

York, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

We are The York Ghost Merchants; The makers and sellers of the original and finest York Ghost. Ours is indeed a most idiosyncratic business. Our ghosts are made by hand using techniques that ensure each York Ghost is a true original. Ghost making is at the heart of the business.

Although we look back at the traditions of ancient crafts and respect the values of a bygone era, be assured that we are an innovative and forward-thinking company. The Merchants strive to create a supportive and friendly environment where creativity and individual skills are valued.

The retail shops are at the forefront of our business, with many customers journeying far and wide to visit us. Unfortunately it is not always possible for everyone to travel to York and so throughout the year we will sell limited edition ghosts online via our website. Due to continued strong online demand we are looking for a new E-commerce Manager to help lead our Digital Sales department.

Position Available: Part Time. 25 Hours per week, Monday to Friday, ideally 9am - 2pm.
Contract: Permanent.
Pay: 18.50 per hour, moving to salary following successful completion of probationary period.

We have an exciting opportunity for an E-commerce Manager to join our Head Office Team in York city centre. This is a permanent role, working Monday - Friday for approximately 25 hours a week (exact hours to be agreed). The successful applicant would be filling an existing position with the necessary resources and tools already in place; however there is great potential for the right person to help build and improve our online offering even further.

The primary function of the E-commerce Manager is to organise and oversee the sale of our Ghosts through our online platforms, through to successful dispatch to the customer. While this might sound straight forward there are a lot of digital systems, processes and procedures in place behind the scenes which need maintaining to ensure everything runs smoothly.

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented person, preferably with some experience in ecommerce, shipping & logistics and people management. The ideal candidate will possess strong organisational skills, excellent computer literacy and be open to change; always looking for ways to improve what we do.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for someone to really take ownership of the role. The successful candidate will have plenty support from our existing E-commerce Manager, the Founders and Workshop Manager but in time will work with a large degree of autonomy and will ultimately be largely responsible for online sales strategy and systems. With this in mind it is important the successful candidate can manage their own time and will take ownership and responsibility of their own work.

The successful applicant would also be responsible for managing the 2 other members of the online sales team; ensuring they have the adequate tools and support needed to complete their daily tasks.

Given there is often quite high demand for some of our online sales the role does involve a lot of interaction with customers, often by email and phone. The E-commerce Manager might be the only Ghost Merchant certain customers interact with, if they are unable to visit our shops. It is therefore very important to us that the successful candidate understands the importance of a personal response so our customers feel understood and valued.

We expect all our staff to uphold, promote and demonstrate by example the core values of The York Ghost Merchants and to encourage through good working personal health and safety practices an efficient safe working environment.

We are an equal opportunities employer. We are committed to equality of opportunity and recruiting team members who reflect the diverse communities we serve.

A degree of flexibility around working pattern (to be agreed). Company sick pay (up to 3 days). Employee Assistance Programme. Option to join health cash plan. Extra holiday day after 2 yrs. service. 50% discounts for personal purchases. Yearly bonus scheme at discretion of the founders and as a result of company performance metrics. Option of a free massage each month.

Experience editing websites(s) including updating product listings on online platforms, often making live, in real time changes to active sales. Experience using Squarespace, Wix, Shopify etc Customer care experience. Responding to customer queries in timely manner. Ability to organise own work and plan work / manage the other team members. People management. Managing mailing lists and communication with subscribers. Managing multiple product information, imagery and attributes are accurate and easily understood. Open minded and embraces continuous improvement. Happy to look for and promote and drive positive change / improvements. Experience working with delivery partners / couriers to achieve best prices / solutions for us and our customers. Experience shipping internationally and understanding of implications around tariffs etc. Monitoring and updating GSPR. Confident in use of basic MS Office programs.
This role is ideal for candidates who are organised, tech-savvy and comfortable working with large amounts of data / numbers.
