Electrical Design Engineer - Energy Transition & Building Services

Purpose:

Supporting the design function by producing electrical calculations, drawings, and documentation required to deliver successful low-carbon and energy efficiency projects. The role includes developing and integrating solar PV, BESS, LED lighting, and building power infrastructure, as well as supporting the wider design of electrical systems for sustainable retrofit and regeneration projects. The position also provides front-end design and pricing support to the sales cycle and contributes to planning applications on live projects.

Duties:

Lead and support design development for solar PV and BESS systems using PVSol, SolarEdge Designer, and equivalent tools.

Contribute to the design of broader electrical building services, including distribution systems, LED lighting, smart controls, and integration with HVAC, BMS, and heat pumps.

Assist with early-stage feasibility, design, and pricing support for proposals and tenders, ensuring technical and commercial robustness.

Provide technical input for planning applications and funding submissions, producing compliant drawings, reports, and calculations.

Carry out load assessments, equipment sizing, and compliance checks against BS 7671, IET Wiring Regulations, UK Building Regulations, CIBSE, and PAS 2035.

Prepare and coordinate design documentation including specifications, reports, and drawings.

Support BIM and CAD-based design processes.

Provide input into project risk reviews, procurement, and early contractor engagement.

Liaise with clients and internal stakeholders to communicate design solutions effectively.

Operate in accordance with Quality, Health & Safety, and Environmental Management Systems.

Work with our delivery teams to ensure projects are delivered as specified

Capability Requirements

Experience:

Degree in Electrical Engineering (BEng or equivalent).

3-6 years' experience in electrical services design, including solar PV and BESS projects.

Experience across retrofit or low-carbon projects preferred.

Familiarity with early-stage design and pricing for tenders and supporting planning submissions.

Actively working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with CIBSE or IMechE.

Retrofit Designer Certification (or willingness to achieve, with support provided).

Technical Skills:

Balances specialist solar/BESS knowledge with a broad electrical engineering skillset.

Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.

Good understanding of BS7671_2018+A2_2022 - Requirements for Electrical Installations /CHP/ heat pump/solar PV systems design principle

Proficiency in solar/BESS modelling software such as PVSol and SolarEdge

Competent in AutoCad, Armtech (Trimble)

Familiar with national specifications - NES/NBS

Understanding of current building regulations (particularly Approved documents G, L & J with an understanding

of Approved documents B, E, F, H, M & P an advantage).

Excellent Microsoft Office Skills

Flexible and willing to travel to conduct site visits within the UK.

Other Requirements:

Awareness of CDM and health & safety requirements; IOSH/NEBOSH or equivalent desirable.

Full UK driving license - frequent travel to client sites.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: 35,000.00-45,000.00 per year
