On-site at Corston Architectural Detail, Malmesbury, Wiltshire
Salary bracket 35,000 - 45,000 a year
You will design, develop and industrialise
Matter-certified dimming products
using Thread for smart lighting applications. This cross-disciplinary role spans hardware, embedded firmware and system integration with a strong focus on interoperability, regulatory compliance and exceptional dimming performance.
Your work will ensure products are ready for volume production, certified to industry standards, and deliver high-quality, flicker-free behaviour across a wide range of loads.
Key Responsibilities
Product & System Design
Lead design of smart dimming products (leading/ trailing edge, 0-10V, DALI, PWM).
Define system architecture including MCU, RF, mains power electronics, sensing and protection circuitry.
Ensure robust dimming performance: flicker-free, low noise, wide load compatibility.
Hardware Engineering
Create and review schematics and PCB layouts for low-power RF and mains-rated circuits.
Evaluate and select Thread-capable SoCs (e.g., Nordic, Silicon Labs, NXP, Espressif).
Design for EMC, ESD, thermal performance and manufacturability.
Support prototype build-ups, bring-up and debugging.
Firmware & Connectivity
Develop or integrate embedded firmware for Matter and Thread stacks.
Implement relevant Zigbee/Thread device clusters for lighting control.
Support OTA updates, commissioning and diagnostics.
Interface with mobile apps and cloud / ecosystem partners (Apple, Google, Amazon).
Compliance & Certification
Lead/support Matter and Thread certification activity.
Drive compliance with
UKCA, CE, LVD, EMC, RED, and RoHS
.
Manage engagement with test houses and certification bodies.
Manufacturing & Lifecycle Support
Collaborate with contract manufacturers during NPI and mass production phases.
Generate and maintain technical documentation (schematics, test specifications, production test plans).
Investigate field issues and support continuous improvement efforts.
Required Skills & Experience
Essential
Demonstrable experience designing embedded/electronics products for volume production.
Strong understanding of Matter and Thread or closely related networks (e.g., Zigbee).
Experience with dimming and lighting control electronics.
Knowledge of mains-powered product design and safety requirements.
Familiarity with UK/EU regulatory compliance and certification processes.
Desirable
Hands-on experience achieving Matter certification.
Exposure to smart lighting ecosystems (Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa).
Knowledge of DALI, KNX or professional lighting control systems.
Experience with design optimization and cost engineering for high-volume manufacture.
This could be a role for a Graduate with 1-2 years experience, or someone with 4-5 years working knowledge
Qualifications
Degree or equivalent in Electronics Engineering, Embedded Systems or a related discipline.
