Job Description

The unit manager will work closely with the ED Matron to provide assurance high standards of patient care are delivered in the ED and smooth daily operations take place.



The Emergency Department (ED) Unit manager is accountable and responsible for the twenty-four-hour care delivery and management of the ED, including the supervision of staff and students. To achieve this, the unit manager will work in a supervisory capacity and will be expected to lead and manage team performance thus enhancing patient experience, improving patient outcomes and contributing to the organisational priorities of improved patient flow, reduction in staff sickness levels, safe and effective deployment of the nursing workforce. The unit manager will act as an exemplar role model delivering high standards of care through always demonstrating care and compassion.



The unit manager will drive standards ensuring key performance indicators are worked within and support staff to achieve emergency medicine performance metrics to optimise patient experience, care and journey in the department this includes: 4 hour performance, time to initial assessment and ambulance off load and improve staff health and well being and the environment in which we work.

The above responsibilities consist of the following attributes to name a few:



Maintaining an active registration; including the appropriate revalidation



Maintaining and up to date portfolio



fulfilling mandatory training requirements



Professionally accountable and responsible for assessing skill mix and team structures and implementing changes in working practices accordingly ensuring that care processes and systems support the delivery of high-quality patient care



Working collaboratively with PALS and Patient Forums to investigate and resolve patient concerns/ complaints, involving ward staff in developing action plans and progress development meetings within given timeframes



To ensure staff are familiar with national, professional and local quality issues relevant the delivery of nursing services, e.g. CQC



Generating and sustaining relationships that promote dignity, diversity, rights and responsibilities within the team and wider organisation



Optimising the learning environment within the department by ensuring good induction of all staff including students



Facilitating the development of nurse-led quality improvement initiatives.



Work with the practice education facilitator team in ED to ensure the compliance of all mandatory training and NMC revalidation requirements, ensuring all records of training and development are maintained



Supporting the ED Matron and divisional management team to develop the service within the department area and implement service improvement using the appropriate service transformation tools and monitoring of key performance indicators



Providing the ED matron assurance daily checklists, daily quality walk around and reports are completed and submitted daily



Reviewing, investigating and resolving datix's



Completing relevant audits within the department
