The Legal Department of JPMorgan Chase & Co. provides legal advice to the Firm globally, across all lines of business, corporate functions, and regions.

The Global Technology Legal Practice Group, which is a part of the Corporate Legal Department, provides legal support to the firm\'s technology organization, and to all business units on data and technology matters. Among other topics, this Practice Group provides primary legal coverage in the areas of Blockchain and Digital Assets, other emerging technologies including Quantum Computing Research and Artificial Intelligence, Privacy, Intellectual Property, Cybersecurity, Cloud, Data Management, Real Estate, Technology Transactions, Outsourcing, SaaS and Licensing Agreements. The firm provides clients with best-in-class platforms, products and services by leveraging cutting-edge technologies and novel solutions, and the Tech Legal team supports these innovations and initiatives. This global team of attorneys advises on new products and services, the acquisition of all technology services, research and development, and external partnerships and collaborations.

You will join the Tech Legal Practice Group as a member of the Emerging Technology Legal team. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney with transactional and emerging technologies experience and interest to work at the intersection of tech and finance. We are a fast-paced business with an ambitious technology agenda, and this role offers the opportunity to collaborate, innovate, and provide strategic advice.

Job responsibilities

  • Structure and negotiate agreements and relationships with vendors, partners, and other third parties related to emerging technologies and initiatives, including blockchain, digital assets, and quantum computing, among others.
  • Leverage JPMorgan\'s position as an industry leader in the distributed ledger and tokenization space to help achieve the firm\'s strategic goals within multi-party collaborations, consortia and projects.
  • Draft custom forms of agreement for complex, non-standard engagements and relationships.
  • Structure engagements with universities and national laboratories engaging in cutting-edge, emerging technology-related research.
  • Advise business, strategy and technology stakeholders on legal risk in connection with the development of new blockchain and digital asset initiatives.
  • Partner with business, regulatory, and government relations stakeholders to engage, educate, and help guide regulatory and industry policy globally related to crypto-assets, central bank digital currencies, DLT, artificial intelligence, and other innovative technologies.
  • Provide advisory and transactional support to the firm\'s applied research teams and innovation centers in the technology organization.
  • Operate within cross-functional teams with business, compliance and strategy partners to solve for novel legal issues presented by the application of new technologies in financial services. Educate internal legal colleagues and serve as an in-house legal expert, counseling internal clients with respect to emerging technologies.
Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills
  • Practicing attorney advising on complex commercial matters, with proven experience directly related to emerging technologies in the financial industry.
  • Ability to articulate strong knowledge of emerging technology legal issues and financial industry business use cases - e.g. tokenized assets, blockchain, DeFi, NFTs, CBDCs, and AI and to analyze and advise on complex legal and regulatory issues, often when no definitive guidance is available
  • Demonstrated interest in new and emerging technology solutions and applications; technical expertise and ability to communicate easily with technologists and developers.
  • Familiarity with global, with a focus on EMEA, regulatory issues relevant to the use of emerging technologies in financial services
  • Ability to partner with regulatory affairs teams to help formulate feedback to regulators, actively participate in the formation of the firm\'s advocacy approach and substantive positions on in-scope issues and periodically attend meetings with regulators, as may be needed
  • Ability to draft and negotiate unique and complicated documentation, including NDAs, evaluation agreements, proofs of concept, participation agreements, MOUs, consortia agreements, and other transactions/agreements related to Emerging Technology projects
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build consensus across a global matrix organization
